CCA Alabama commits $150,000 to Alabama Marine Resources
Division for Reef Projects
Montgomery, AL – CCA Alabama and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources/Marine
Resource Division (“AMRD”) joined forces again in 2013 on multiple reef projects on Alabama’s gulf coast. “The
partnership between CCA Alabama and the AMRD is crucial to the success of building new fish habitat and
refurbishing existing reef structure in our marine ecosystem,” said Travis Taylor, CCA Alabama’s Executive
Director.
The range of projects includes three permitted sites on the west end of Dauphin Island where three new reefs of
3-5 acres each will be installed in the waters of less than 12 feet deep. The funding will also add new materials to
three existing reefs – Zundel’s, Grey Cane and Battles Wharf—that have been degraded by storms or siltation over
the years. The final project calls for deploying reef material in two other large reef areas that are located in state
waters off the Gulf of Mexico 5 miles out from Perdido Pass. Low relief materials or structures will be used in parts
of these two reef areas in an effort to create a habitat for juvenile fish.
Tireless efforts of CCA Alabama members from all over the state have made this project possible. CCA
Alabama uses banquets, members’ dues, individual and corporate donations, and CCA license plate revenues to fund
conservation projects. These projects are all consistent with CCA’s mission of conservation, preservation and
restoration of marine resources.
