St Bartholomew: in the New Testament, St Bartholomew is mentioned only in the lists of the apostles. Some scholars identify him with

Nathanael, a man of Cana in Galilee who was summoned to Jesus by Philip. Jesus paid him a great compliment: “Here is a true Israelite.

There is no duplicity in him.”

St Rose of Lima: The first canonised saint of the New World has one characteristic of all saints—the suffering of opposition—and another characteristic which is more for admiration than for imitation — excessive practice of mortification.

St Louis of France: At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace.

St Monica: Mother of St Augustine of Hippo.

St Augustine of Hippo: Sinner turned Saint - a Christian at 33, a priest at 36, and a bishop at 41.

Message from Fr Tom: I too am beginning a new learning curve. The language is difficult; that’s putting it mildly, but I have discovered there are more ways than one of communication - a smile for example, and a basic response too; it doesn’t matter if they/I don’t understand, as long as some goodwill is generated.

I can't remember ever having seen a stork, but on Sunday there were three of them flying around, I thought they were looking for a site for a nest, but of course they will be soon off to the warmer climes of Africa: sensible creatures, but not before entertaining me!

I was able to join a couple of Pilgrimages, one in honour of St Anne at a tiny Chapel in the forest and, after Mass, to be greeted by a

Brass Band, and all the fun of the fair –, swings and roundabouts, and beer and sausages, in a strange country there are new things to greet you every day, as long as I remain vertical.

Love and Blessings to you all - Fr Tom
