Dear EPIC Academy Parent/Guardian,
My name is Alexandra Herndon, and it is my pleasure to have your child in my
Chemistry class this year. I’m writing to let you know that your child has been selected
to participate in the Honors program for this trimester.
Your child will be challenged in many ways with the Honors program so that they
may grow and find success at their level. In class, they will be required to complete all
challenges or extensions to the class work. You will find EPIC Academy’s Honors
Policy, as well as my Honors course requirements, located on the back side of this letter
to help you and your child with this decision.
If you prefer that your child not be placed into the honors program, please reach
me by e-mail at aherndon@epicacademy.org, or by phone at (253) 797-3798, or return
the bottom portion of this letter signed and dated indicating you do not want your
student to be enrolled in honors chemistry. Please note that students must make final
decisions about participation in the honors program by September 16th. If no response
or decision has been made by September 16th, your child will automatically be enrolled
in the Honors Chemisty course, and will be required to complete Honors Chemisty
course work.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Herndon

EPIC Academy Honors Policy: EPIC Academy believes that students should be challenged.
Therefore, with parent permission, a teacher or grade level team can “steer” a student into
honors courses. EPIC Academy also believes that all students should have the opportunity to
challenge themselves with tougher work. Therefore, any student has the right to attempt
Honor’s work. Once the student enrolls in honors, they must complete the course at that level.
In addition to having colleges see Honors in the course name on your transcript, each course a
student successfully earns credit for is worth an extra 0.5 points on a student’s GPA. For
example, if a student earns a C in an Honors class, they would receive 2.5 GPA points instead
of 2.0. This only applies to As, Bs & Cs.
My Honors Class Requirements & Policies: Honors students must complete the honors
extension work found in the Honors Folder. Any student may attempt the honors work, however
honors students must complete the assignments each week. Honors students are responsible
for picking up the weekly Honors assignment every Wednesday. Honors work is due the
following Wednesday by 4:30pm. I will be available for help during my office hours (Thursday
3:30-4:30).
Honors Learning Targets:
● I can analyze scientific theories and principles supporting the atomic structure
● I can apply general chemistry knowledge to solve advanced chemistry problems
