Prof. Ilana Bar Present Activities Our interests encompass a wide range of disciplines, ranging from understanding of fundamental physico-chemical processes to development of new tools based on different spectroscopic methods for trace detection and to ex-vivo bone regeneration. Vibrationally Promoted Photodissociation Studies. This topic focuses on one of the most sought after goals in the field of chemical physics, the dream of selective bond breaking in polyatomic molecules. One of the fascinating schemes that have been conceived to achieve this goal is that of vibrationally mediated photodissociation, based on excitation of different skeletal motions of molecules and their subsequent interaction with photons. To this end we have shown that in some cases the desired reaction pathway can be preferentially selected, in others the state distributions can be altered and the nature of vibrationally excited states can be characterized (in collaboration with Prof. S. Rosenwaks). Laser-based diagnostics. A great deal of effort is expended these days in attempt to develop and utilize laser-based diagnostic techniques, owing to the availability of laser sources with high temporal, spectral and spatial resolution. These methods purvey high levels of analytical performance characterized by real-time or nearly real-time capabilities, high selectivity and sensitivity and in situ monitoring. Therefore, they might be employed for tagging and detection of atmospheric gases and environmental pollutants, and for forensic and military applications and different processes including combustion and incineration. In particular, we focus on finding the spectral signatures, i.e., the “fingerprints” corresponding to nitro compounds allowing detection of vapor-phase and solid traces of explosives in ambient air (in collaboration with Prof. S. Rosenwaks). Ex vivo bone regeneration. This newly and interdisciplinary project combines principles of cellular-biological and biomimesis processes along with photonics to explore cell–material-laser irradiation interrelations. We focus on the development of novel biomatrices of marine origin and ablated biomatrices coated with calcium carbonate and calcium oxide micro- and nano-sized particles, on the establishment of a cell-material system for studying in vitro ossification, and on the determination of the potential for modulating mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)osteogenic phenotypes. Achieving an understanding of the biomechanism responsible for enhanced bioactivity and pluripotency of MSCs is assessed by a variety of physical, chemical and biochemical analyses and will hopefully lead to optimization of bone scaffolds and to development of new methods of obtaining ex vivo ossification (in collaboration with Dr. R. Vago and Prof. S. Rosenwaks). Relevant Publications Bar, I.; Cohen, Y.; David, D.; Arusi-Parpar, T.; Rosenwaks, S.; Valentini, J.J. 1990.
