Minutes – PTA GENERAL Meeting
November 6, 2013

1. Call to Order and Welcome – Michelle Greenberg, President.
 The meeting was called to order at 8:41 a.m.
 Introduction of new City of Miami Police Safety Officers Loras (sp?) and Quinones
with Commander Norberto Blanco. Officer Loras updated us on safety issues
concerning the school. Non-emergency number: 305.579.6111
 Motion to approve minutes of September 4th, 2013 PTA meeting by Renata
Benedini. Motion seconded by Maureen Romero-Uluc.
2. Treasurer’s Report – Maureen Romero-Uluc
 Presentation of current budget with updates on membership drive, the most
successful ever.
 New fundraisers ongoing- IFF and Science Fair boards.
3. PIPA – Cristina Brulay
 November 12-15th is Brazilian Heritage Days with a week of events, including
soccer, a movie, Designlab, and ending with IFF on November 15th.
4. IFF – Laura Paret
 All booth captains for the event have signed on.
 Currently running the corporate sponsorship drive, look for the nice envelopes in
the students’ backpacks.
 Presale tickets on sale until the 14th, credit cards are accepted.
 Volunteer hours for MYP students are available.
5. Communications– Nayla Benitez
 Introduced Ada Merritt newsletter, the Achiever, available in color every 2 months.
 Sorting out the many emails that are being returned “undeliverable” from the
parents. Please email adamerrittptamiami@gmail.com with your correct email
address if you are not receiving emails.

6. Membership – Jane DeNight
 A big thank you to Jane for a very successful membership drive, 100% in
elementary school. Ice Skating party was a hit. Membership drive is officially over.
 Cappuccinos, cookies and balloons were the key.
7. SIPA – Dania Gorriz
 SIPA is back and going strong.
 Membership drive currently underway, rosters posted outside of classrooms. Drive
will culminate on the 15th at IFF with giveaways at the Spain Booth. Flamenco demo
at 4:45, raffle at 5.
 Paella night Nov 16th.
8. PYP evaluation – Ms. Jackie Sanchez-Jimenez
 Ada Merritt is an IB world school and is reevaluated every 5 years for their PYP
program. We are being reevaluated in March of 2014 and parents are part of that
evaluation. Looking for parent volunteers to be part of the team. There will be a
meeting on Nov 13th at 8:30a in the media center.
9. Technology – Mr. Moreira
 Have raised $5000 in donations.
 Have 6 computers ready to be picked up for donation.
 Corporate drive is ongoing with goal of getting 10 companies from Spain and 10
from Brazil to sponsor technology programs at Ada Merritt.
 IT goal is $160000.
10. Principal’s Report – Principal Carmen Garcia
 Met with new City of Miami security officers and walked through the city park.
 MYP evaluation was successful and Ada Merritt is now being asked to mentor and
evaluate other IB programs. We were reauthorized as an MYP school.
 All public schools are part of county-wide accreditation. 84 schools will be selected
for a visit in March as part of accreditation process.
 Ms. Sandra Daire is one of three finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence
for teaching math. Thank you to the PTA for providing her tools necessary for
teaching throughout the years.

Fall Interim assessment for 3-8th grade coming up, that looks at first nine weeks of
learning. Proficiency is 70%.
December 9th is picture day.
EESAC funds will be used to purchase three laptops for technology teachers.
Planning for the set up of a computer lab with a total cost of $18000 and will have 25
computers.
Report cards are posted on the Portal.
Question from Tony Porro about t-shirt fundraisers. Ms. Martin suggested a Decade of
Excellence t-shirt since we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Ada Merritt.


Prince and Princess of Spain visiting an IB school in Miami and certain Ada Merritt
students will make a small presentation for them.
The preference for students with a Spanish passport has been placed on hold because of a
civil action.
