A Georgia Improving Teacher Quality Funded Higher Education Program The Georgia SHORE Program June 7-21, 2015 Immerse yourself in a coastal Georgia experience, bring inquiry activities back to your classroom, and conduct your own research while earning, graduate credit or PLUs! You can have it all this summer with funding thanks to the “Improving Teacher Quality” grant to the UGA Marine Extension Service Join us for a two-week course that will bring you up to date on the latest coastal biology discoveries and ecosystem issues in a really exciting way! The courses will begin with an overview of basic marine ecosystems coastal Georgia. Activities aboard the R/V Sea Dawg include biological sampling of the estuary and water chemistry analysis. Laboratory activities will include the collection and identification of plankton, invertebrates and fish. Next, participants will explore scientific inquiry methods with applications for classroom use. Participants will complete all steps necessary to design a research project, collect data, and report the results in a fun way! The two-week course will be based at UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island GA, and include a 2 night/3 day stay on Ossabaw Island. Housing is dormitory style, and cafeteria meals are provided with the course. You must be able to stay onsite for the entire program; no commuting allowed. The dorm and cafeteria are air conditioned, yet much of the time will be spent outdoors. Moderate physical activity is involved and participants should be in good health. Enrollment is limited to 16 students.
