Lesson 29 - (Metas p. 286-293)
Objective: Introduce the last new chapter – 6B. Cover the interview and new vocab.
Materials: book, computer to listen to the interview
Warm-up: Have students brainstorm international companies or foreign companies in
the US and talk about the range in products. (gets them thinking about globalization) For
example, did you know that Volvo is owned by a North American company now? So are
Jaguar, Dodge, LandRover, and Jeep. Did you know that the maker of IBM laptops is
now Lenovo (a foreign company)? Ask students if they even know if a company is from
the US or not? Do they care when shopping? (5-6 min)
Activities:
1. Introduce the new chapter: La globalización. Listen to the interview and then have
students answer the discussion question ¿Qué quiere Dr. Sosa? After you have heard a
few good responses have the students work in pairs to write 5 recommendations that Dr.
Sosa would give college students of today. Then have some groups read a couple of
suggestions out loud. (15 min)
2. Next tell students that we need to think about this issue more carefully. Have students
write 4 sentences in favor of globalization (for example, from the perspective of a CEO
of an international company) and 4 sentences against it (from someone trying to preserve
local businesses and customs like Dr. Sosa) using vocab words from pages 289-290.
They must use new words. Then in their groups have the group decide on their
position: are they in favor or against globalization? Have the group present their final
decision to the class and then defend it. Other groups who agree can back them up so
they will all be taking turns. The idea is to have a class debate that the students have
already semi-planned in their groups. (20-25 min)
3. Time permitting – have students write clues that describe vocab words (or they can act
out words.) (5-10 min)
