Rationale: Color is a vital aspect to understanding the creation of art. Color has the ability to set moods, evoke emotions, and enhance imagery into multiple dimensions and perspectives. Artists have used color and patterns to create visual wonderlands for the viewer. For example, the contemporary artist Niki de
Saint Phalle embellishes her sculptural forms with colorful mosaic patterns in order to produce images of amusement, whimsy, and liveliness.

Time Required: 2 class periods; 90-minute periods

Objective: After the student is familiarized with and discussed Niki de Saint
Phalle’s sculptures, the student will be able to add color to their figure sculptures in order to convey whimsy and liveliness.
