The growth of online shopping
People use computers for many different activities, from reading online newspapers to listening to music, but the fastest-growing areas of computer use are online shopping and internet banking.
Until recently, shoppers had two choices: they could buy things from shops, or they could order them by post or phone from a catalogue.
What has made internet shopping so popular is the increase in the number of broadband internet connections. To attract customers, many online shops and. companies now have interesting, user-friendly websites which make buying things easier than traditional ways of shopping. With just a few clicks of the mouse, you can order almost anything you can find in ordinary shops. In some countries, people order their food online and have it delivered by supermarkets to their homes. In Britain, experts believe that in the next year, online shopping will increase.
As well as being easier for people with busy lives, internet shopping also helps people to look for things they cannot find In their own area and lo find them at the cheapest prices. Interestingly, researchers have found that the largest increase in online shopping is among men.
People are also changing to internet banking. In the past, everyone used to go into their bank to put money into their accounts or to arrange to borrow money. Now, more and more people are doing all their banking activities online. Some people never visit a real bank - when they need cash, they get it from a cash machine.
