Bearing
The primary function of the AFO is to control the
alignment and motion of the joints of the ankle and
foot. The most common application of the AFO is
to compensate for weak dorsiflexors.
The primary function of the KAFO is to provide
knee and ankle stabilization and allow passive hip
stabilization.
The KAFO provides flexion and
extension along with mediolateral stabilization of
the knee.
The purpose of the PTB orthosis is to permit
freedom of motion of the knee joint and early
weight bearing without increased shortening of the
limb or interference with fracture healing.
Plastic orthoses are generally more cosmetic. They
are lighter and offer greater flexibility in design.
Plastic permits a closer fit and more precise control
of pressure distribution. Also, with the plastic AFO
normal shoe wear can be utilized.
The plastic KAFO permits a closer fit and more
precise control of pressure distribution. The KAFO
extends from thigh to the foot, and normal shoe
wear can be utilized.
