Fall 2014-2015 Syllabus MUP 161-162; 261-262 2 Semester Credit Hours C I. Private Trumpet I, II, III, IV 1 Contact Hour Course Description Individual performance instruction on trumpet with emphasis placed on developing technique, repertoire, and performance skills commensurate with student’s educational goals. Students are required to practice a minimum of five hours per week for each credit hour. Upon completion, students should be able to effectively perform assigned repertoire and technical studies in a performance evaluation setting. II. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor III. Course Textbooks, Manuals, or Other Required Material Selected repertoire as directed by the instructor. IV. Course Learning Outcomes A. The student will have an opportunity to learn correct trumpet techniques B. The student will be introduced to numerous scales C. The student will be introduced to standard trumpet literature and transcriptions D. The student will be encouraged to sight read music V. Activities Promoting General Education Outcomes A. Cognition 1. The student will use musical analysis skills in preparation of the music 2. The student will be cognizant of the stylistic differences of the periods of music and of various composers works B. Aesthetic sensitivity 1. The student will demonstrate an appreciation of the aesthetic and cultural merits of art and solo song literature 2. Course grade assessment 1. The students will be assessed on the weekly progress of the assigned material. 2. The students will be required to practice a minimum of five hours per week. 3. The students will be given a final exam that assesses their ability to synthesize the information. 4. Grades will be based upon A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, and F = below 60%. B. Departmental assessment of General Education Outcomes 1. The general education outcome of cognition will be assessed by an assignment that requires students to use musical analysis skills. 2. The students will present a jury at the end of the term to assess the general education outcome of aesthetic sensitivity. 3. Every five years the MUP 161-162; 261-262 instructor will conduct an assessment of this course. The appropriate forms will be completed by each instructor and submitted to the division chair. C. Use of Assessment Findings During the Fall In-service of the year following the scheduled review of MUP 161-162; 261-262 a committee will review all course assessment materials submitted by the instructors and division chair. The committee will submit a report of any recommended curriculum changes for MUP 131-162; 261-262 to the division chair who will then submit them to the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Committee. Upon approval by the SLO Committee, a copy will be filed with the Office of Institutional Planning and Assessment. IX. Attendance Students are expected to attend classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend classes regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from the class before attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. X.
