Title of Unit: Ancient Egypt Author: Emily Kreilkamp Timeframe: 17 days- (40-45 minute class period) Grade: 6th Subject Areas: Social Studies, Technology, Oral Language Objectives: Students will be analyzing information on Ancient and Present day Egypt through websites and videos. They will learn to identify names of vegetables in Egypt’s language of Arabic. The students will then research a topic on Ancient Egypt, such as Pyramids, Mummification, King Tut, or the Nile River. After researching, they will create a script for a podcast or audio recording. In the end their final product will be an audio recording using Audacity to share their knowledge learned on Ancient Egypt. Use internet, books, magazines, etc. Days 11-12 Days13-14 Begin watching videos from National Geographic. Answer questions to videos. Watch podcast on Arabic and take quiz. Days 15-16 Write script with each part for a 45130 second audio recording to share information. Students will use Audacity to create podcasts. Present podcasts to the rest of class. Wrap up the unit with discussions and learning about Alex the Great Day 17 Day 1: Dress as an Egyptian and give power point presentation on Ancient Egypt. Tell the class information about Egypt’s location, the Nile River, writing, housing, clothing, and modern times. Also give an overview of the Ancient Egypt Unit. Day 2: Demonstrate use of Audacity, giving the students a paper with a few step by step directions for future reference. Show the class where to find the websites/video and discuss the worksheet of questions from those resources. Create a list of how to collect research and what to include to aid students. Days 3-7: Students will be watching videos from National Geographic’s website about King Tut & the Lost Dynasty, Tut’s Treasures, Unlocking the Great Pyramid, King Tut’s Final Secrets, and Egypt’s Sunken Treasures. They will also watch a podcast on Egypt to gather information from the past and present times. Once the video’s are complete they will be listening to two different podcasts from ArabidiPod101. One lesson they will listen to and the other they are going to have to learn how to speak different vegetables. Once they are ready, they can take a podquiz on identifying the vegetables in Arabic and comparing Arabic to English. Days 8-10: Students will begin researching their selected topic on Ancient Egypt. They are expected to try and answer who, what, when, where, why and hows. Take notes for audio recording. Days 11-12: Students will begin creating scripts for their audio recordings. They will outline the format, then write out each persons lines. This is also a time to run through and make sure they present information about their topic. Days 13-14: Students will use Audacity to create an audio recording/podcast. The podcast should be anywhere from 45-130 seconds. They can add music to the background and include other features. They will have to follow the rubric to make sure everything is included. Days 15-16: Students will present their podcasts to rest of the class. They will have to do an introduction and share what they liked and disliked about this project. This will allow other students to learn information about different topics. Day 17: Wrap up the unit with reviewing concepts and discussing how events affected the culture. Show video clip of Alexander the Great and the Lost Tomb from National Geographic.
