FAMILY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP
GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
ST. ANTHONY FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY
I.
Introduction – we are honored you have chosen to spend time with us. We love teaching medical
students and invite you to make the most of your time with us. If you need anything, please let the
residents, faculty and staff know and we will do our best to help you. If you have special interests
please tell us so we can help this clerkship be fulfilling for you.
a. Meals – you will receive meal tickets (fifty $2 tickets) you can use to purchase food at the hospital
cafeteria.
b. Parking – parking is free in the parking garage adjacent to the professional building on 9th street.
You can park anywhere that is not labeled as physician or patient parking.
c. Pager – you will receive one during your orientation.
II.
Expectations
a. Students will have orientation and EPIC and New Innovations computer training on the first day.
They will meet with Melinda, Damesha, or Rick in residency room at 8:30 a.m.
b. Dress code: When on FMC or FMS, student is to wear business casual attire. When on OB and
overnight call, student is to wear scrubs, which can be obtained at the hospital.
c. Student is expected to be present daily during expected hours. They are not to be excused unless
approved by attending.
d. You will not have any weekend responsibilities.
III.
Schedule
a. First Day
i.

Starts at 8:30 in the residency 608 NW 9th suite 1000, OKC, OK 73102
You will be oriented to the rotation and EPIC. You will be taken to Human
Resources to get a badge.
b. Rotation Schedule
i.
Your schedule will be sent to you about 2 weeks before the start of the rotation.
ii.
Each activity is described below along with the expectations.
IV.
FMC – Family Medicine Center – ambulatory clinic - across the hall from the residency
a. Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
b. Experiences include routine continuity clinics with a resident or faculty and procedure clinics
(FMC) including dermatology, colposcopy, and OMT clinic (for osteopathic students).
c. Expectations:
i.
Arrive at 8:00 a.m.
ii.
You are not expected to see all patients. Ideally, you and your preceptor should
review the schedule to pick 4 patients for you to see individually. You should
complete at least one handwritten progress note and present it to the clinic attending.
Presentations should include pertinent history, physical exam finding, and your
assessments and plans. Your progress notes will be useful to your supervising
physician to help provide feedback. Please bring 2 clinic progress notes to your
rotation supervisor, Dr. Abell, for critique.
iii.
Feel free to pick patients with interesting findings.
d. Required Reading – there are weekly assigned articles. They are over various topics that are
commonly seen in the clinic. These can be accessed in New Innovations> Conference> AMB.
V.
Community Clinics – MOJ or Crossings clinic
a. We provide care in the evening to patients without insurance at a few church based clinics.
b. You will be assigned to go to one of the clinics during your time here.
c. Crossings Clinic
i.
You will need to be there from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
ii.
The clinic is about 15 minutes from St. Anthony’s.
iii.

d. Ministries of Jesus (MOJ)
i.
You will need to be there from 5:45 – 8:00 pm.

The clinic is about 25 minutes from St. Anthony’s.

FMS – Family Medicine Service – Inpatient Team

Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Check out is at 7:00 am in the resident room
Teaching rounds begin at 10:00 a.m. at a location designated each morning during check-out
Expectations
i.
Externs should manage 2-3 patients.
ii.
Upper level residents will supervise externs.
iii.
Externs should write progress notes, using EPIC templates.
iv.
Externs should present the patients they have seen on teaching rounds.
v.
Good presentations are concise (no longer than 3 to 5 minutes), well-organized, and
include relevant history (if new patient include chief complaint, HPI, PMH, Meds,
Soc. History), relevant physical exam (include vitals), your assessments, differential
diagnosis and plans.

Tip – Volunteer to research clinical questions that surface on rounds

In the afternoons, students will help with admissions, discharges, and follow up
patient tests and procedures.

The primary purpose in our interactions with patients is to provide excellent,
evidence-based care. Keep in mind that your observations and suggestions can be
very important to patient care. In as much as you have more time to get to know
patients and study their conditions, you might be able to provide the missing piece of
the puzzle, or otherwise make significant contributions to their care. Even your
listening can be therapeutic.

Please bring at least one H&P, ICU progress note, and general progress note to your
rotation supervisor, Dr. Abell, for critique.
e. Required reading – there are assigned articles for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. They
are over various topics that are commonly seen in the hospital. These can be accessed in New
Innovations
f. Other Resources: Washington Manual, Ferri’s Guide to Care of the Medical Patient, Up To
Date (available on SAH computers free of charge). Also you can go to the Intranet on New
Innovations for other resources.
Overnight Call
a. You will have one overnight call during your month. You will need to be at check out in the
resident room at 6:00 PM. You will be following the FMS resident. Let the OB resident know that
you want to be called to deliveries.
b. Expectation is that you will do at least one H&P during the night, attend the codes and any
deliveries.
c. The Call rooms are on the third floor east of the ICU across from the resident lounge. Codes are in
the pocket manual you received.
VIII.
OB - Labor and Delivery
a. Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
b. Who makes up the family medicine obstetrics team?
i.
Family medicine resident, faculty and medical students
c. Patients family medicine residents are responsible for:
i.
SAH patients
ii.
FMC OB Patients
iii.
Faculty OB patients
iv.
Dr. Bhoplay patients
v.
Drop in patients every other week
d. Expectations
i.
Laboring patients – typically, cervical exams every 2 hours during latent and every
hour during active phase. Go with the resident and have the resident check behind
you to assess your accuracy. Need to document the findings.
ii.
Post-Partum and Newborn notes completed by teaching rounds (typically around
9:00 a.m.)
iii.
Outpatient triage – evaluations for labor, ruptured membranes, non-stress testing.
iv.
Ultrasound clinic – occurs weekly in the FMC every Friday at 8:00 a.m.
e. Required reading – there are assigned articles for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. They are
over various topics that are commonly as it pertains to OB/Gyn. These can be accessed in New
Innovations, Conference Calendar.
IX.
BCC - Birth Choice
a. Birth Choice is a crisis pregnancy center where we perform the initial prenatal appointment and
then refer them to our Family Medicine Center.

You need to be at Birth Choice from 1:20 -5:00 pm.
It is about 15 minutes from St. Anthony Hospital.

For each patient the following needs to be completed:
i. New Ob visit including
1. Complete history
2. Complete physical exam
a. Pelvic
i. Examine labia, vulva, vagina and cervix.
ii. Do not have to do a pap if pt < 21 yo.
iii. Swab for GC/Chlamydia
3. Basic OB ultrasound – include placenta, number of babies, heart tones and
crown rump length.

Feedback – let us know how your rotation is going midway through your time with us. We will do
likewise. If there are areas that intrigue you and you would like more exposure, let us know. Once
again, we want this to be in exceptional experience for you so that you will know the joy of family
medicine.

Evaluations
a. Our program uses a web-based system, New Innovations, to collect evaluations. The SAFMR
clinical evaluation form has been developed based on ACGME competencies. Students should
supply Dr. Abell with a copy their own school’s evaluation at the beginning of the rotation.
b. You will receive evaluations from your attending on Family Medicine Service and Obstetrics and 2
of the residents in clinic. Then you will receive a summative evaluation from Dr. Abell.
c. All students will complete an anonymous rotation evaluation.

New Innovations
a. New Innovations is our web-based residency management program. It will have the conference
schedules and articles.
b. Accessing New Innovations
i.
Go to https://www.new-innov.com/Login
ii.
Enter Institution login: safm
iii.
Enter your username and password, which are both the same, unless you have
logged in before and changed your password. It should be your first initial
and last name (all lowercase). For example, Nancy Drew would be “ndrew”
in both fields.

Once you log in you will have the option to change your password by clicking
on the “CHANGE PASSWORD” link on the menu bar.
Becoming Familiar with New Innovations
i.
Once you have successfully logged into New Innovations, you should see the
following screen.
ii.
At the bottom of the screen are two sections called notifications and favorites.
Click on them and drag them to the top of your page next to the picture. After
you have arranged your page to look like the screen below, click Save Page
Layout in the top right corner.

In notifications, you will receive your evaluations to complete on your rotation.
Favorites – select Add/Remove in the bottom of Favorites. Add Departmental
Manuals and Intranet. You can remove everything else except Conference Schedule.
Departmental Manuals will have the reading for procedure conference. You can find
them by going to Resident Handbook, Procedures, Procedure Readings
Conferences - In My favorites, select Conference Calendar to see what the daily
noon conference is. (see section which conferences are residents only)

Articles for FMS and OB - My favorites, select Conference Calendar. Select “InPAT:” or “OB:” item on the calendar. When you double click on it you should get a
