Naxolone (known as Narcan) is a medication that can reverse an overdose caused by an opioid drug (heroin or prescription opioid medication). When administered during an overdose, Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids in the brain and quickly restores breathing. When administered to a person who is dependent on opioids it will produce withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal although uncomfortable, is not life threatening. Naxolone has been used safely by emergency medical professionals for many years and has only one critical function, to reverse the effects of opioids in order to prevent overdose death. Naloxone has no potential for abuse. Overdose Prevention Kits: have 2 doses of 1mg/1mL naloxone hydrochloride in prefilled needleless syringes, nasal adaptors, breathing mask, instructions, referral information, and owner card and a DVD to share with others in the family. House Bill 170 passed in March 11, 2014 now allows Naxolone to be prescribed to a friend or family member or other individual who is in a position to provide assistance to an individual who there is a reason to believe is at risk of experiencing an opioid related overdose. This is a free seminar presented by Parents of Prodigals of Summit County; there is NO Charge but a free will offering will be taken to help with the costs.
