Prithvi Theatre Yearbook Release
SATYADEV: THEATRE KE ANOKHE DUBEY
Through this yearbook, we share with you the extraordinary and often eccentric
contribution of one man to theatre. We have tried to do this in Dubey style –
informative, irreverent, interesting but always entertaining.
Film Screening:
SHANTATA! COURT CHALU AHE (Marathi with English subtitles)
Writer: Vijay Tendulkar; Screenplay: Vijay Tendulkar, Satyadev Dubey; Producers:
Satyadev Dubey, Govind Nihalini; Director: Satyadev Dubey
Shantata ! Court Chalu Ahe, was written by Vijay Tendulkar in the mid-sixties and
remains one of his best-known early works. This scathing portrayal of middle class
morality was first performed on stage in 1967. In 1971 Satyadev Dubey, the “enfant
terrible’ of theatre decided to make it into a film. It marked the film debuts of actors
like Amol Palekar, and Amrish Puri, and was also cinematographer Govind Nihalani’s
first independent film. Theatre enthusiasts will spot familiar faces from the nascent
Marathi experimental theatre movement of the 1970s among the hugely talented
cast.
2 pm
Sunil Shanbag
directs
THE PERFECT MAN (English)
Writer: Vikram Phukan; Group: Arpana
The world thinks Fatima is quiet, reserved and repressed. Her felicity of spirit is
revealed only in the privacy of her room, where she can enter a 3D universe. An
incongruous love story with an avatar lies ahead with the accelerated emotions
typical of such encounters. Will she wake up from the dream, or will she be
transformed by the very real emotions that she feels in a virtual world?
Jayati Bhatia
performs
MISS BENARE’s DEFENCE (English)
from Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe/Silence! The Court is in Session
Writer: Vijay Tendulkar; Translator: Priya Adarkar; Director: Sameera Iyengar
A rehearsal for a mock courtroom trial turns ugly, as the ‘case’ against ‘accused’ Miss
Benare begins to blur the line between truth and fiction. Leela Benare’s defence of
herself against the so-called upholders of social norms is considered a classic
monologue in contemporary Marathi theatre. Here is an English version .
Irawati Karnik
directs
KORDYA UNHATLE UPDATES (Marathi)
Writers: Irawati Karnik, Dharmakirti Sumant; Group: Mithak
3 monologues. A glimpse into the lives of 3 young people today – the reality of being
young in today’s times … the energy, the fragmentedness, the drive, the confusion
associated with these young lives.
Atul Kumar

another rough night at work. Till a lovelorn latecomer disrupts the
proceedings, and a few ordinary women suddenly find themselves behaving...
well, rather extraordinarily.
Utkarsh Mazumdar
performs
BAPU ALA KHACHAR (Gujarati)
Based on poems by Ramesh Parekh; Director: Utkarsh Mazumdar; Group Sarvanaam
Bapu, a feudal lord, has lost his fiefdom and is now reduced to penury. He lives in a
dream world because the past which was once glorious is now reduced to nothing.
He has neither power nor physical prowess. His pathetic condition evokes tragic
comic feelings.
Makrand Deshpande
directs
AUCTION (Hindi)
Writer: Makrand Deshpande; Group: Ansh Theatre Group
The Auction is of changing times. The auction is no longer of old ideas – it is of the
new ones, just born.
7:00 pm
Sudhir Pande
performs
INTERACTION OF VIMLENDU & PROF. ARVIND (Hindi)
from Ek Aur Dronacharya
Writer: Dr Shankar Shesh; Director: Subhash B Dangaich
A strong comment on our corrupt system, on how principles, convictions, ideologies
succumb to the establishments governed by corrupt and power-hungry forces.
Sudhir Pande performs solo the interaction between the characters of Vimlendu and
Prof. Arvind, which conveys the content of the play.
Trishla Patel
directs
SAME SAME BUT … DIFFERENT (English and Hindi)
Writer: Trishla Patel; Group: tpot Productions
Centuries have passed, wars have been won and lost, nations have changed
hands...Everybody feels that things have changed a lot. But have they? Some things
just don't change, and thank god they don't. This short piece is a humble attempt in
trying to discover how things are 'same same but different'...in our world as we
know it Today.

CONFRONTING ILLUSIONS (Hindi)
from Salesman Ramlal (Adaptation of Death of a Salesman)
Writer: Arthur Miller; Adaptation: Imteyaz Hussain; Director: Feroz Khan;
Group: Moving Platform
Ramlal is caught in a web of installment payments, technological obsolescence and
retrenchment. He finds reality unbearable and keeps slipping into illusions and
nostalgia to make some sence of his present life and reaffirm his dignity. This is a
play about an ordinary man with extraordinary dreams. This scene deals with the a
father's refusal to accept his son's desperate plea to face the truth.
