Fourth Grade Passage and Prompt
DIRECTIONS: Read the passage and prompt and type a composition in
the box below.
PASSAGE:
Sometimes, we forget that, even in America, there are people who go
hungry. Food banks are places where people in need can go to get food.
Food banks help people of all ages and backgrounds.
This year, your fourth grade class has been asked to help a local food
bank. Lately, the food bank has been low on supplies. The bank is having
a food drive to try to increase their stock. The people in your area are
good people. It’s not that they don’t want to help others who are in need,
but everyone is busy. Many people forget about food drives. Others feel
that they don’t have time to make donations.
Your teacher thinks you can help. She thinks your class should convince
your community of the importance of donating as much food as possible to
the food bank.
PROMPT:
Write a letter that will convince others to help the food bank. Your teacher
plans to send the letters from the class home to parents and to others in
your community.

Sixth Grade Passage and Prompt
DIRECTIONS: Read the passage and prompt and type a composition in
the box below.
PASSAGE:
One of the best things about school is that it gives everyone an
opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Friendships often
develop among people who share the same interests and activities:
sports, music, books, movies, television programs, subjects in school.
But there is also an old saying that “opposites attract.” Sometimes, it is
the differences between two people that spark the best friendships. We’ve
all known people whose best buddies are nothing like them! Someone who
is really outgoing, for example, may have a shy best friend. Someone who
is fabulous at sports may really enjoy the company of a friend who excels
in the arts.
How about you? Do you most often make friends with others very like
yourself? Or do you more often find yourself pulled to those who are very
different?
PROMPT:
Write an essay for your classmates in which you explain why you most
often make friends with those who are similar to you OR why you most
often make friends with those who are different.
