PASSAGE:

Perfect World

For centuries, men have sought the creation of an ideal society. The perfect place, especially in its social, political and moral aspects, has been described in countless documents. In 1516, Sir Thomas More wrote a story of an island where Utopia existed. In the 20 th Century, Lois Lowry’s and Ayn Rand’s

The Giver,

George Orwell’s

Animal Farm,

Anthem

PROMPT: There are those who still believe that with continual effort we might be able to achieve utopia here on earth. Write a letter to the United Nations describing your own personal utopia. Using your five senses, show what life is like on a day-to-day basis in your ideal world.

PASSAGE:

Green Machine

“Going Green” is the catch phrase of the day. On television are all kinds of public service announcements encouraging consumers to change light bulbs, recycle plastic bottles and paper, and buy energy efficient cars. Even supermarkets sell cloth bags to hold groceries rather than relying on the use of plastic or paper.

Although it may sound simple, going green requires dedication and effort on the part of all citizens, especially young people. For this to become a way of life and not just a fad, all of us must be part of this process. As students who have an interest in the future, much must be done to make the dream of a green planet come true.

Therefore, to have a world that will last beyond this century, our wasteful ways will have to change, and who better to lead that change than today’s teenagers?

PROMPT: Write a proposal for your school’s student council in which you outline a number of ways students, faculty, administrators and service personnel can turn your school into a real

green machine

.

PASSAGE:

Epiphany

Imagine you are on your way home from school thinking about a concept your teacher was trying to explain during class earlier that day. No matter how hard your teacher tried, you simply did not understand what she was trying to say. Suddenly, you become excited because what the teacher was trying to teach you finally clicks in your mind and you now understand the concept. You’ve just experienced an epiphany.

An epiphany is defined as “a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something.” In other words, an epiphany might be described as that moment when something clicked and you gained a sudden realization or understanding of an idea, a skill or a concept.

Think of an epiphany you have experienced when you suddenly realized that you understood an idea, a skill or a concept with which you had been struggling; it might be related to a class that you took or a specific athletic skill you were trying to perfect. For instance, you might think about a time when you suddenly understood how to identify a simile or metaphor in a story or poem or how to factor a quadratic expression in algebra. Or it might be when you finally understood how following through on your jump shot helps improve your shooting percentage in basketball.

PROMPT: Write a story about a time you experienced an epiphany. How did you finally arrive at your epiphany? What changed your perception and gave you new

insight? Your essay should help readers comprehend how you evolved through this struggle with the idea or skill.

PASSAGE:

To Snack or Not to Snack

In recent years, the issue of nutrition has become extremely important to school systems. Recent studies indicate obesity is reaching epidemic levels in the United

States. West Virginia consistently ranks among the top ten states in the nation in terms of health-related issues such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

In an effort to remove junk food from hallways, gyms and cafeterias, snack and pop machines have been banned from most schools. However, some people believe that this policy is a violation of students’ rights and that students should be allowed to make their own choices when it comes to food selection.

PROMPT: Assume that you are a student representative who is to speak before your local board of education. Draft a speech in which you argue for or against the placement of snack and pop machines in your county’s schools.
