
Skillful conference “Woman and Science in the Dominican Republic: Perspective for his
development”, in charge of Dra. Maria Zunilda Núñez and Lic. Venecia Alvarez. May 2011.

Professor Idelisa Bonnelly spoke a conference named “35 years in the conservation of the marine
mammals in the Dominican Republic” with the motivation of the celebration of the World-wide
Day of the Oceans, June 8, 2011.

1st Seminary Woman and Science, with the participation of national and international recognized
scientists, with the collaboration of important institutions of our country; Ministerio de Educacion,
Ministerio de la mujer, Ministerio de Educación Superior Ciencia y Tecnología, Ministerio de
Relaciones Exteriores, Faculty Sciences of the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo, among
others.

Conferences about “The Bats and the interaction with the forests” in order to name the 2011 the
year of the bats and forests, by the Dra. Norm Fabian.

We are in the final phase of the elaboration of a data base of the Dominican scientific women of
different institutions of educative, scientific character or from investigation of our country.

An interesting video was made by the Lic. Venice Alvarez, a news article on the scientific work
realised by Dominican women in aspects of the natural resources and environment.

We started the program” Woman, Science and Dominican Forests” coordinated by academic
Venice Alvarez.

Interviews in different mass media to the Dra. Yolanda Ricardo, Cuban writer and Corresponding
Member of this Academy, promoting the work of the women in science, October 2011.


Putting in circulation the book “Resistencia en la Antillas tiene rostro de mujer¨, by author Dra.
Yolanda Ricardo. October 2011.

Putting in circulation the Bulletin ¨Woman and Science¨. September 2011.


Elaboration of informative posters and banners and investigation for the different realized
activities.

Participation of the Lic. Felicita Heredia, as representing the Dominican Republic in the publication
of the document about “Handling Coastal Marine of the Dominican Republic¨ in the University of
Cadiz, Spain.

• Different recognitions were given to some of our academic ones:
o
The Dra. Irene Perez Guerra, was recognized by the Organizing Committee of XIV
International Book Fair 2011, when designating the name of a street of the Place of the
Culture with her name, the 14 of May, in addition the Dominican Academy of the
Language recognized the Dra. Irene Perez Guerra, in attention to her support to the
activities of our institution and its vocation on watch with generosity and altruism, the 29
of November.

The National Museum of Natural History of Santo Domingo, paid a tribute to Professor
Idelisa Bonnelly when dedicating to her the No.4 edition of its Magazine Novitates
Caribea, corresponding to the 2011, the 11 of August, also was decorated with the Order
to the Merit of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella, in the degree of Commander, by means of the
No.551-11 Decree of the Executive authority, act presided over by the President of the
Republic Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reyna.

In August 31st the Dra. Algeria Aybar, Member of the Medicine Commission, Was
recognized by the International Advisory Committee of the Science and Technology Chair
(CIACT) for the important researches conducted in the field of medicine. The well-deserved
recognition was given in acknowledgment of her research entitled “Molecular study of
dengue virus strains circulating in the Dominican Republic.”

Establishing/strengthening a WfS committee at your academy – results
At the moment we have a managing committee, and for this year 2012 we have as a goal to establish it
formally. It is formed by: Dra. Maria Zunilda Núñez, Lic. Venecia Alvarez, Prof. Idelisa Bonnelly, Dra. Norma
Fabian, Lic. Felicita Heredia and the Dra. Lusitania Martinez.

Alerting your academy to opportunities for nominations – results

Research program of Short Stays in the United States USA-IANAS. For which we presented two
candidates, resulting in the selection of Dra. Yolanda Leon of the Jaragua Group, NGO, that realizes
investigations in the field of marine biological sciences.

OWSD Prize. We are processing a nomination for this prize.


Your interactions with the other Programmes, results and plans
The Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic has connections with the Programs of Education; Focal
point, Dr. Nelson Moreno Ceballos, Water, through academic Ing. Osiris de Leon and Energy by Ing.
Manuel Peña. Through Program of Education our teachers and schools are benefitted by the Program
Science in the School. With the Water Program, we participate in the book of water of IANAS, the Program
of Energy is with which less we have interaction, for this year the Academy has seted out to fortify this
area. It is possible to mention that we have participated in numerous meetings of the three programs, of
which they have been of benefit by the acquired experience and knowledge.

The WFS Program has obtained a great impact until now, obtaining the support of important institutions
like; Ministerio de la Mujer, Educación Superior Ciencia y Tecnología, Educación, Recursos Naturales y
Medio Ambiente, Cultura, Relaciones Exteriores (MIREX), Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones
Agropecuarias y Forestales (CONIAF), Instituto de Innovación en Biotecnología e Industria (IIBI), Jardín
Botánico Nacional (JBN), Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, Banco Popular Dominicano, among others.
The Academy is being represented by women in many of the scientific activities of realized in our locality,
also and no less important is to mention than the Commission of Social Sciences and the Environmental
Equipment of this institution is directed by women; the Dra. Martha Ellen Davis and Lic. Felicita Heredia,
respectively, being this last the Coordinator Dominican Republic IBERMAR. The Dra. Maria Zunilda Núñez,
besides to be vocal of the Focal Point Of Women of Sciences of IANAS, is Member of the Directive Council of
this Academy of Sciences.
We persecute with the program, as we have mentioned previously to build an institutional culture also in
the organisms and scientific institutions, to promote the education in Science and Technology for women,
to emphasize the paper of the investigators, to support the formation of networks and leaderships of
women in Latin American Science.

A prognosis of your availability and involvement in 2012
The Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic is in all the disposition and has all the intellectual
capacity and motivation to continue with the development of Program WFS.
