There is the potential that it can be sprayed into eyes or inhaled. Most repellents contain DEET which dissolves paint, plastic and other materials. ON ARRIVAL Parking – as there is limited space inside the grounds of HBEEC and because there are often many children moving around, we ask all accompanying adults to park their cars in the cul-de-sac outside HBEEC grounds. Buses deliver passengers inside the centre. All vehicle parking is at owners risk. Children take all their gear under the covered area between the car park and the oval. Depends on whether an overnight camp is on site or not! My Doc/Website Changes/Lyn 2006/ Day Excursion “Info Sheet” GENERAL INFORMATION In the event of any accidents requiring ambulance assistance all children at the HBEEC are fully covered under the Queensland Ambulance Service’s School Subscription Scheme. Although a timetable is sent before arrival, teachers must appreciate the need for flexibility if unforseen situations arise eg. rain etc. With all groups large or small it is the visiting teacher’s responsibility to make sure children are fully supervised at all times as there is the potential for dangerous situations to arise. It is a risk assessment requirement that if you have never visited this site before your excursion date YOU MUST familiarise yourself with the centre’s layout and facilities. Eating areas – the main area for day excursion groups to eat is under the shade trees between the toilet block and the beach. If it is raining the covered area or kitchen can be used, whichever is not being used by an overnight camp group. PARENTAL ASSISTANCE For parents accompanying the school group it is STRONGLY ADVISED THAT THEY DO NOT bring children who are not part of the visiting class on the excursion. Their role on the day may be to supervise the students participating in activities, which would be difficult to do if they are minding a young child. Young children can also be distracting to the school children during the activities and are more likely to react to mosquitoes and sandflies. Adults accompanying the school group (eg. aides, parents) must be prepared to have a very active role in the day, if the day is to be a success. All adults need to be involved with the children, to help get the most out of each activity. WET WEATHER If the forecast is for rain the centre teacher will contact the weather bureau on the morning of the excursion and then talk to the co-ordinating teacher to discuss whether or not to go ahead. If we decide not to proceed with the excursion, another day could be decided upon. If no other day is available, the day will have to be cancelled. My Doc/Website Changes/Lyn 2006/ Day Excursion “Info Sheet” Litter Free Meals HBEEC recommends students arrive with a nutritious litter free meal which will promote good health and a cleaner environment. Being litter free means that you have no or minimal packaging to throw away. Food could be packed in washable, reusable containers rather than plastic or cardboard packaging, alfoil or cling wrap. HBEEC is promoting litter free meals as they:-. Are less expensive to make than a disposable lunch as it does not use costly pre-packaged foods. Are healthier because generally fresh, less processed foods are used. Decrease the amount of litter around our Centre. Tips for packing a litter free meal SUGGESTED LITTER FREE FOOD ITEMS Fruit + Vegies Sandwiches Reusable containers Dried food or nuts Bulk yoghurt put into small reusable container ITEMS WE TRY TO AVOID Purchased roll-up fruits/ muesli bars Poppers Wrapping food in Cling Wrap/ Alfoil Packets of chips/noodles Small purchased containers of yoghurt Remaining organic matter is composted. Recyclable items are recycled. Reusable containers are washed and returned home. This means no rubbish should be going into the bins at the Centre from meals if everyone brings a litter free meal. Cold water is provided at the Centre. You can bring a water bottle to refill if you wish.
