The minutes of the 102nd Annual meeting held on 29 November 2010 had been circulated. They were
accepted as a correct record.
Confirmation of a Special General Meeting Minutes
The minutes of a Special General Meeting which was held on 18 December 2010 had been circulated. They
were accepted as a true record of that meeting.
Address by Club Chairman
John Hunt invited the Management Board Chairman, Andy Evans, to address the members.
Andy advised that the financials of the club are unaudited and apologised for this. He said the accounts will
be audited by February 2012 when a Special General Meeting will be called for members to discuss and
adopt them. Andy continued, saying there were three nominations for the new Management Board who
were not able to be present at this meeting – Steve Shaw, Rowan Armour and Mike Tamati. He gave a brief
overview of each candidate.
Management Reports
Chief Executive Officer Report - Scott reported on the running of the Club, battles with Council over fields,
training lighting and their rejection of the ‘best endevours’ clause in the sale and purchase agreement for
Liston Park. He had secured the use of Liston Park for training for the 2012 season; the tennis courts were
available for use during inclement weather. Another project is use of the Tan (indoor training facility. Use
of a gymnasium for training and is a big incentive when recruiting new players and it is important for the
future of the club. There are growing interests in clubrooms hire with bookings on most weekends. The
Club relies heavily on bar income and this is not as good as hoped. Achievements over past 6 months –
restructure more on rugby focus, strong relationships with Mt Wellington Tennis Club, Computer Clubhouse
training onsite, Marist Netball will come back here for training if club gets more lighting on the tennis
courts, Gaelic Football Association wants to run club days out of the clubrooms, Baradene Rowing Club
wants to run their club out of Marist also. These opportunities are good income streams and will gradually
form a multi-sport club which will be good to take the club into the future. Setting up of the Members’
Lounge as a memorabilia place is good for regular members to use if there is a function in the Tamaki
Lounge. Thank you to Dave, Hamish, Marlene, other Board members for their help.
John Hunt asked if there was any discussion on Scott’s report. Bob Clarke mentioned all the key projects
and asked for approx timeline. Scott thinks 2-3 year plan. Bob asked if there is a short-term list. Scott said
mainly on function hire and rugby focus. Andy Evans said most of the goals are inspirational and said that
most of the club’s focus is back on rugby operations and having successful teams. He said that most of
Scott’s projects will be long term but initially the focus is on rugby. Bob Clarke asked about the
management of the club going forward. Andy Evans said this is being worked through and will be
communicated with club membership when confirmed, before Xmas. Milton Ross fully supports Scott and
his coaching group with the renewed connections with Sacred Heart College. He said that their goal is to
push the students leaving College to Marist which can be difficult – 11 of 15 students leaving will be joining
the club next year. It is important that some club structure stays in place to ensure that this continues and
thanked Dave, Scott and Hamish.
Financial Report
John Hunt confirmed that the Club’s financial accounts had not been audited at the time of the meeting
and invited John Christie to address the members. Copies of Clubs 2011 financial accounts had been
provided to members.
Maurice Nicholson enquired about the loss of $400,000. John Christie explained - $150k non-recurring
items such as rates, relocating expenses without bar takings, legal costs, opening costs. Recurring items
consist of new grants, such as Rugby Development Officer, items of high expenditure such as insurance,
wages/salaries, costs associated with move, increase in cost of team expenses, timing of move from Liston
Park to Mt Wellington War Memorial Reserve. Bob Clarke asked if things have got out of control. John
Christie confirmed this is correct and explained detailed cost increases. Bob also asked about player and
non player subscriptions and John confirmed the collection was poor. The Junior Club subscriptions were
done at a reduced rate as a welcoming gesture to the Tamaki community and Junior Club. Sam Wimsett
asked if there was a rebate system on player subscriptions. Andy Evan confirmed there was so teams
would not keep asking for money from the club – team subs were set at $2,500 and that once paid, $2,000
were returned to the team to cover team expenses. Discussion ensued – team subscriptions and rebate
was not in the financial interest of the club. Maurice Nicholson asked whether a budget had been drawn up
for 2012. John Christie said it was in draft form and will be monitored to ensure the club doesn’t lose a
large sum next year. Brendon Gibson said that at the SGM in February 2012, to accept the audited
accounts, there will be a lot of clarity on these expenses and a lesson learnt going forward. Kevin Hickland
said that the bar is running at a gross profit. John Hunt closed the conversation as the financial accounts
will be discussed at the SGM in February. Members were invited to send questions in writing to the club,
so these can all be answered in February.
Bob Clarke thanked John Christie for having the guts to stand up and answer the questions. Suggested that
the Management Board get themselves organised for the remainder of the year to avoid this kind of
questioning next year.
Auckland Rugby Football Union Report
Gary Whetton read the Auckland Rugby Football Union’s annual report to Clubs.
John Hunt asked if there were any questions for Gary. Mark Sumich asked enquired of rumours that
marquee teams will be playing at different venues in 2012. Gary referred that question to Council of
Delegates as they are in the process of discussing it. John Hunt confirmed that an email had been received
by the Chairman of COD today on that subject. Sam Wimsett asked about atrocious club rugby reporting in
New Zealand Herald. Gary agreed and said it is out of ARFU reach. Scott Couch asked if the Auckland
Rugby Football Union is liaising with Auckland Council over the use of grounds. Gary confirmed that the
Rugby Union is constantly talking with Council’s Parks and Reserves department. John Hunt confirmed that
the Auckland Union is pursuing a case for more rugby fields for Clubs’ use and for fields year round to
accommodate 7s rugby. However, there is always a struggle against other sporting codes, especially soccer.
John Hunt thanked Gary for his report and invited him to remain for the rest of the meeting.

Peter Dooley enquired whether Eva Rasmussen had moved to Australia. John Hunt confirmed that Eva had

this will be done.
Membership cards process was raised. Scott Couch confirmed that a new electronic system will be put in
place in 2012 to ensure everyone gets their cards.
Gary Walters suggested the state of the annual report was disappointing. He wanted to see a better annual
report that members can be proud of and that people can look back on in the future. John Hunt said this
would be done and an updated version would be available at the February special General Meeting.
Dick O’Sullivan asked if the Tamaki logo on the Marist jerseys is a permanent thing. Dennis Fowler said it
was part of the amalgamation agreement between the two clubs.
Paul Loftus asked if a chair-lift or similar could be installed to aid the disabled. Scott Couch confirmed that
it has been priced and that any new clubrooms would include access for disable persons.
Michael Tanoai spoke on behalf of the players. He considered there was a disconnect between the players
and the club management and asked if that gap could be narrowed. He said players look forward to
receiving their 50 game blazers and they should, where possible, be presented on the day of the blazer
game. John Hunt said the player blazers can be issued on time if the club administration is informed in

Chairman’s Report
19 November 2012
The arrival of another Annual General Meeting always gives us the opportunity to reflect on another year. It is only
when we take the time to consider the journey the Club has been on in recent years, can we truly appreciate how far
we have come on this journey, and how far we have to go.
Looking back on the last 12 months, we should be truly proud of what we have achieved and the strength of our Club.
On the field: No one can forget Finals Day. The Premier, Under 21’s & 19’s and women’s teams all competing in their
respective finals, with the Under 19’s and Women taking out their championship. That day will be remembered, in
victory or defeat, for the display of Marist colours and proud vocal support. Whether it was at Eden Park, or Dunkirk
Road, the Marist community came out in force and demonstrated what it meant to be not only a Club with a long a
proud history, but a Club with strength and solidarity within its ranks.
Success on the field does not happen by accident. I would like to thank all of the coaches and managers who have
volunteered time and energy getting teams onto the park every Saturday. In many instances the level of
commitment to our players has gone above and beyond the call of duty. The players individually thank you. Securing
the services of coaches and committed volunteers in today’s busy world continues to be a challenge, and we would
not be able to operate without them..
Our on field success is further demonstrated by the Clubs strong playing numbers and links with the community.
Dave Mackinnon, our Director of Rugby & Operations Manager and Hamish Fraser, our Rugby Development Officer
have spent many valuable hours developing relationships with both Primary and Secondary schools in our local area
and with our traditional Catholic Schools.
As we move into our second year at Dunkirk Road, we can also reflect on a number of “off field” successes. The
building works are all but complete. The completion of this work not only transforms the “Tan” into a fantastic
training facility, but more importantly will bring our current building up to Code. This ensures we are not only
complying with fire safety regulations, but also allows us to apply for new liquor licence, avoiding some of the
complications we faced this year.
A second field was sand carpeted this year and training lights installed. Work on a lighting and sand carpeting a third
field, has been approved by Council and will commence before the end of November and is due to be completed in
time for the 2013 season. This result was achieved with a lot of persuasion on the part of Dave Mackinnon, with the
support of Allen Verrall and the Tamaki Local board.
This year’s Annual Club Luncheon was an exceptional success. Marist All Blacks Bernie McCahill, Terry Wright and
Robin Brooke were presented with their caps surround by their families and fellow Marist members. This was a
made possible by Kevin Hickland and his team of volunteers who put together such a great event. Kevin has also
overseen the bar operations this year- Thank you.
The collection of Subs for2012 is up, almost double that of 2011.We have applied, and been successful, in collecting
grant funding which has allowed us not only keep our door open, but enhance the services we provide to our players,
members and the community. Thank you to Marlene Castle, our club administrator, particularly with regard to the
trust applications and audit.
We thank the on-going support and patience of the Marist Rugby Charitable Trust. Our appreciation also to Parker
Joyce and the Four Winds Foundation Ltd for the ongoing support of our Rugby Development Officer. Thank you also
to the Auckland Rugby Union and Auckland Council for their support, in addition to all of the other trust and
organisations who have provided financial support to Marist this year.
I wish to express thanks and gratitude to the current Management Board. We have completed our first full year at
our new location. We have encountered some extremely challenging situations this year. Faced into and made some
difficult decision and engaged in robust conversations at every turn. While there have been challenges, we should be
proud of what we have achieved and I know that the club is in a better position because of the learning’s along the
way.
I would also like to take this opportunity to recognise John Hunt who is stepping aside this year as President. John
spends many hours volunteering his time with the clubs administrative duties and gate keeper of the gear room. This
is in addition to his role as Chairman of the Council of Delegates and Board Member of the Auckland Rugby Union.
John has played an extremely important role in not only advocating the Marist Club, but for all Club Rugby for
Auckland. I wish to thank John, and although no longer President, I know he will continue to work in support of the
Club.
As we reflect on 2012, we also need look to 2013 and beyond. We need to examine what role we wish to play as an
Amateur Rugby Club and a Community Organisation. We have always been a Club with great ambition and at the
time of the sale of Liston Park, many members have expressed ideas of various ways Marist should be investing in the
Club’s future. This may be spending more money and growing our organisation, or making cost savings and
consolidating our position. Either way, as members of this Club we need to show support for the Management Board
and the individuals who put their hands up to make decisions for the Club on behalf of its members.
I have now completed my third period as Chairman. It is with some sadness that I will not be seeking re-election.
However, my work commitments and young family deserve my focus now and mean that I cannot continue to give
the amount of time needed to be a committed and fully functioning member of the Management Board. My time on
the Board has been extremely rewarding, with the Club going through highs and lows, that have not only brought
about positive and monumental changes for our Club, but have also grown me as an individual. I hope that I can still
to continue provide support to the incoming Management Board and contribute towards future boards.
I wish all members and their family a very merry and safe festive season and all of the very best for 2013,
Simon Devoy

Senior Club Rugby Review
The 2012 season should be considered a success. We obviously want to win everything! But moving from Liston Park
in 2011 always meant we would lose a bit of ground. Our recovery has been positive and relatively quick.
This year we fielded twelve senior teams, with seven teams playing in competition grades. Of those seven sides six
made the playoffs, four went on to play in championship finals and two sides, our Under19’s and our Women’s team
went on to win their championships. It was a fantastic effort from our Women’s and Under 19 sides!
Special mention too should go to our Premier side, who contested their first Gallaher Shield final in fifteen years.
Unfortunately we went down to a star studded Grammar Carlton side but there is plenty to be positive about.
Hopefully our finals appearance is a sign of good things to come for our young Premier team.
Our playing numbers rose from 330 in 2011 to just over 400 in 2012. We are looking to seriously build on those
numbers in the next few years. Next year it is our intention to field at least two more senior teams. Our aim is to field
another team in the Under 85kg grade and another team in the Senior One grade.
Earlier this year I was invited to join an ARU sub-committee to address the entire structure and format of adult rugby
in the Auckland region. I am pleased to say that there is a new competition structure in place for 2013. You will now
be able to see our Premier, Premier Reserve and Under 21 teams play at the same venue as each other. Next year the
Reserves and Under 21 sides will both play at 1pm preceding the Premiers at 2.45pm. This will enable Premier
coaches to view or use players from either of the earlier matches and spectators to view their young talent as well as
their top side. It also means our Premier match will be the focal point of our Saturday afternoon rugby.
Another change in the 2012 competition structure is the introduction of a stand-alone U20 grade, which replaces the
current Under19 grade. This was initiated because kids nowadays tend stay at school longer. It was also designed to
allow young players who may not be physically ready for U21 or adult grades to still play competitive rugby. This
grade will share the same competition format as the Under85 or Senior grade.
Sevens rugby is well underway and preseason is just around the corner. We are running off season training
programmes and the gym is almost up and running. So the boys will have no excuses for a lack of fitness or
conditioning. It’s our goal to build on 2012 and make next season even more memorable.
Bring on 2013 MARIST HARD!
Final COA Works
To enable us to operate our Bar, we were required by Law to finish the remaining Fire Safety work to the clubrooms.
We commissioned ASPEC Construction to undertake the works. The contract went well and the builders are now off
site with their contract work complete. ASPEC Construction were a pleasure to work with & very professional. The
project was funded by MRCT.
Gymnasium
We expect to have the gym operational by the 23rd of November. The Management Board and in particular, Steve
Shaw are working on the management plan. We are currently sourcing the remaining equipment required. The gym
flooring, netting and equipment have thus far been funded by external Trusts.
Sand Carpet & Lights
After lengthy negotiations, the Council finally agreed to Sand Carpet and light our number 3 field. Spraying is
scheduled for Monday the 12th of November with the main contract work to begin later that week. Completion date
is proposed 1st April 2013.
Council have also agreed to sand carpet & light a large off field training area adjacent to Dunkirk Rd and parallel to
the new field. This will provide us with much needed floodlit training space and help to protect our playing surfaces.
The project is fully funded by Auckland Council.
Senior club training next season will be at MWWM and not Liston Park. Our next project will be to look to floodlight
our number one field with a view to playing night rugby. This would give us 3 fully floodlit & sand carpeted fields.
Next year we will also have access to the newly laid astro-turf Mt Wellington Tennis Club courts adjacent to the
clubrooms. The area is floodlit and has removable nets. This provides us with another off field training option.
On-going Council projects we are working on are:







Resurfacing the main entrance driveway & re marking all our driveways & parking areas
Semi-permanent free standing public toilets to the reserve
A retractable screen to the river end of our number one field, to stop rugby balls going into the tide
Upgrading access & drainage to the perimeter of the number 1 field
A mobile irrigation system for the number one field. Eventually we will lay a pop up irrigation system.
Exclusive use of Dunkirk Activity Centre changing rooms during rugby season, to cater for our Women’s
teams and relieve some pressure from our changing rooms.
Exclusive use of all six fields at MWWM during the winter months for Rugby only.

Rugby Development Officer Report
2012 was a big success for Marist Juniors with an increase in numbers up from 340 in 2011 to 430 this
season. On the field we had 24 teams with a big success story being the new relationship with St Mary
Mackillop who joined Marist this year and had 4 teams. We had a number of teams in section 1 of their
grades and competing well in the non championship grades while Marist Sacred Heart again represented
the club at the Club Finals Day.
Marist Eastern also had a big increase in numbers and teams which is great to see.
It has been a busy year in primary schools with most of the Tamaki Principals Cluster taking part in 2 Rippa
Rugby Programmes. The during school programme had 2365 kids that had the opportunity to get coaching
equating to 324 sessions each class getting 4 weeks of coaching, while the After School Programme had
over 300 kids in 3 terms with a different year group targeted each term. We should now see more kids
playing for Marist in 2013.
Marist hosted Pompallier Tournament this year and while the day was very wet there was some great rugby
played in trying conditions. Ardmore Marist narrowly pipped the host club for the overall prize.
I would like to thank Mike Hanley, Ruth Peterson, Tinga Edwards and Uaina Pupulu in particular for their
help with the Juniors your time and efforts were very much appreciated.
Also to all the Coaches/Managers and parents that made sure the children were at games, looked the part
in their kit and had half-time oranges etc etc.
We had a number of players from Sacred Heart, St Peters and Marist that made Walter Dickson, Bill
McLaren and Roller Mills culminating in 3 players from Marist and Marist Eastern playing for the Northern
Region NZ Marist U13’s, they were Tyler Casey, Samuel Casey and Lemeki Namoa who scored 3 tries in the
game vs Southern Region NZ Marist U13’s. Well done to these young lads.

Junior Club Report
Our second season at our Tamaki location at Mt Wellington War Memorial Reserve has come to an end. It
has been a successful season on the field with our teams flying the flag for Marist Rugby. This year the
Marist and Tamaki Junior clubs decided to join as one club, I believe that while some children may not have
played this year it has been a success and we will see increased numbers in 2013 with more teams.
We ended up with 430 players in 25 teams registered this season. One of the success stories was Mary
MacKillop Primary School from Mangere joining our ranks under the Marist Saints name with four Under 7
to Under 10 teams.
It was pleasing to see our Under 8 Restricted, Under 9 Restricted Black Magic and Under 10 Restricted
teams competing in section 1 of their grades and doing very well, also our Under 9 Restricted Blue team
had some outstanding results. Our Under 12 open team developed into a very competitive team and it was
pleasing to see our Under 12 restricted team competing well in their championship grade. They will be
much better for their experience next season. Our links with Sacred Heart College and St Peters College
continued strongly. Sacred Heart Under 13 team had another outstanding year but, unfortunately, falling at
the final hurdle in the final. St Peters Under 13 team were very competitive, narrowly missing the playoffs
while Sacred Heart Under 12 team and St Peters Under 12 team had challenging seasons.
I would like to thank the following people for their assistance throughout the season
Ruth Peterson
Mike Hanley
Tinga Edwards
I have learnt a lot and your support was hugely appreciated.
To all the coaches and parents without you we wouldn’t exist, thank you for all your work over the season,
providing transport, coaching, ringing players, bringing oranges for half-time and other support for our
teams. I look forward to seeing you all again next year when we anticipate an increased number of players,
parents and coaches to step forward.
Thanks to our major sponsor Rainbows End, in particular Chief Executive Chris Deere. Our juniors and their
parents had a fantastic day at the park on Sunday 30th September. Over 170 people attended our family
day, enjoying the rides, barbeque and other activities. We look forward to continuing our relationship in
2013.
Thank you to our minor, but important sponsors who provided player of the day vouchers for our teams:
Panmure Superbowl, MacDonald’s, Placemakers, Pixi Photo
We look forward to a continued relationship in the future.
Next year the Junior Club will be managed by the club committee, led by Parker Cline. Parker has been
coaching in the senior club for the past eight years and has a vast knowledge of the Marist culture and
values, rugby organisation and administration. He will be supported by Mike Hanley, Tinga Edwards,
Ruth Peterson and Uaina Pupulu. Parents are asked to put your hands up to help Parker and his committee
to ensure the club keeps our forward momentum. I will be available to help coaches and run courses for
the club and look forward to meeting you all again. Have a Merry Christmas, an enjoyable new year and
travel safely.
