Morris to Attend Competitive Fellowship at UVA
Lawrenceville, VA: April 30, 2009- Saint Paul’s College Dominion Scholar Aaron
Morris will attend the University of Virginia Summer Language Institute HBCU
Fellowship (SLI-HBCU) Program in June. Morris, one of ten undergraduate students
selected from the Commonwealth’s five HBCUs, will spend the summer in residence at
UVA and earn 12 credit hours in French.
The Dominion Scholars Program is designed to prepare students to be the future leaders
of tomorrow. Participants in the Program receive a $1,000 scholarship each year. In
exchange, the participants agree to serve as informal ambassadors of Saint Paul’s and are
dedicated contributors to the enhancement of campus life.
Morris will learn to speak, to read and to write French in an intensive nine-week course
taught by excellent teachers and researchers who are at the cutting edge of their field. He
will attend classes Monday through Friday, seven and a half hours a day, and experience
the different aspects of the French’s culture through daily activities.
Cheryl Burgan Evans, Director of the Graduate Student Diversity Program for UVA,
created the fellowship program in 2007 to increase the number of underrepresented
students participating in SLI and to ultimately attract those students to UVA for graduate
study. Morris is the third Dominion Scholar to participate in the competitive fellowship.
Morris, a resident of Lawrenceville, VA, is a rising senior majoring in Business. He is a
member of the Dominion Scholars Program, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and
Pre-Alumni Council (PAC) at the College. He was recently elected Mr. Saint Paul’s
College for the 2009-2010 Academic Year and awarded the Sunday A. Adesuyi
Academic Achievement Award for maintaining a 3.968 while playing tennis.
