SER/Hist: TRINITY v HARVARD Economics Debate Wednesday, 3rd February, 7.45pm, GMB, organised jointly by the Student Economic Review and the College Historical Society. The motion is: 'This House Welcomes the Decline of US Economic Dominance', Chair: John Bruton, former Taoiseach and EU Ambassador to Washington, Chair of Adjudicators: Aine Lawlor, RTE Speakers from Trinity: Ruth Faller is a Senior Sophister law student. She was placed ninth at the World Championships in 2008 and was the top European female at the 2009 World Championships. She reached the finals of the Cambridge debating intervarsity, the Irish mace and several other tournaments and recently won the Durham Intervarsity. She is a former President of the University Philosophical Society. Séin Ó Muineacháin is reading for a PhD in Political Science, having a degree in Economics and Political Science.. He has represented Trinity against Yale, Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford, having won the 'best speaker' award on a number of occasions. He is a former correspondence secretary of the Hist. He was on the winning team against Cambridge last November. Niall Sherry is a Trinity graduate in economics, and is currently a postgraduate student doing an MSc in Comparative European Politics. He was a finalist in numerous competitions including the Irish Times National Debating Competition, the Irish Mace, the UCD intervarsity and the UCC intervarsity. Speakers from Harvard: R. Kyle Bean is a senior and the president of the Harvard Speech and Parliamentary Debate Society. In addition to being a member of the current Harvard Team of the Year and seventh Speaker of the Year of the American Parliamentary Debate Association and 2008 North American Championships Finalist, he has been a finalist at multiple tournaments throughout his career and a consistently highly ranked speaker. Alex Loomis is a sophomore and the current Vice President of Outreach of the Harvard Speech and Parliamentary Debate Society. In addition to being on the third placed Team of the Year of the American Parliamentary Debate Association, he was sixth place Novice of the year in 2009. He has been a finalist or champion at multiple tournaments throughout the year. Josh Zagorsky is a junior on the Harvard Speech and Parliamentary Debate Society. In addition to being one of the most frequent debaters on the Harvard team, he has received speaker awards at prestigious American Parliamentary Debate Association tournaments. Along with both Alex and Kyle, he took on Yale in the prestigious Ivy League Triangular debates in 2009.
