Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) Residency Information Purpose Statement Upon completing the University of Colorado Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program, the pharmacist will be an experienced and proficient provider of pharmaceutical care. The pharmacist will be confident in his/her ability to provide optimal pharmacy services in various settings as well as for various disease states. The pharmacist will exercise skill and proficiency in educating patients, healthcare providers, and students / residents on drug related topics. The pharmacist will be skilled in core pharmacy practice areas that include pharmacy operations, clinical care, education, project management, and research. The pharmacist will demonstrate professionalism by developing a personal philosophy of practice, performing self-assessment, and demonstrating professional leadership. Residents will be given examples of projects that are available. The residents are encouraged to choose a topic, which, besides being an area of interest to the residents, will also contribute to the advancement of pharmacy practice at UCH / UCD SOP. The resident will select one or more preceptors to serve as advisors for the projects. All projects will be in compliance with any applicable UCD HSC, UCH, IRB, and HIPPAA regulations. Residency projects will be presented at the Western States Residency Conference and are strongly encouraged to be submitted for publication in a peerreviewed journal. Publication strongly encouraged. Teaching and Education The resident must attend the weekly Pharmacotherapy sessions, case conferences, and journal clubs. Residents are also expected to provide education to the pharmacy staff and other healthcare providers as assigned by individual preceptors. Additionally, each resident may present lectures or other teaching exercises to Pharm.D. students at the College of Pharmacy. Residents may be required to assist in the precepting of Pharm.D. students on clerkship. The resident may attend other seminars as his/her schedule permits. For the teaching component of the residency, the resident will be given the title of Clinical Instructor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy. Time Off Residents will receive 23 days of time off to be used for sick days, professional meetings, vacation days, holidays, interview days, etc. Residents may take no longer than 10 consecutive days off at one time. Service to the Institution PGY1 residents are required to provide 320 hours of service during the residency year. It is required that the resident become a licensed pharmacist. Residents may work flex hours at UCH for pay in addition to their service obligations. Residents are required to work one minor holiday (i.e. Labor Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July) and one major holiday (Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years). Travel: Each resident is given a stipend to assist in meeting the expense of travel to a professional meeting(s) as approved by the preceptor. Library Privileges / Computer Classes: All residents receive full library privileges at the Health Sciences Library. Additionally, library classes (Ovid, Internet, etc.) are free for all residents.
