The project began with a roundtable of community leaders in child abuse prevention and a statewide survey about professional training needs. The faculty created the initial CAPS curriculum in 1990 and the program was housed within the School of Social Work. The first cohort of students began in January 1992. Since that time, CAPS has offered courses via classroom teaching and interactive television, with sites in Duluth, Moorhead, and Rochester. Between 1989 and 2000, CAPS awarded over 165 certificates and provided specialized training for over 350 students. In 1998, MINCAVA funded an interdisciplinary scholarship program that now helps to provide tuition for prospective CAPS students. Beginning with the 1999-2000 academic year, the CAPS home was moved within the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse (MINCAVA), a Center supporting education, research, and access to information about all types of violence. CAPS faculty and program staff continue to stay actively connected to community leaders and service providers in order to provide the most current curriculum possible. The Child Abuse Prevention Studies program has remained one of few graduate-level certificate programs designed for professionals and approved by the Board of Regents at the University of Minnesota. The Future of CAPS On July 1st, 2002, the academic home of the Child Abuse Prevention Studies (CAPS) certificate program will be moving to the College of Continuing Education (CCE) from the School of Social Work, where it has been housed for most of the past ten years since its inception. The program will now reside entirely within CCE, which will provide outreach and marketing, registration assistance for students, and curriculum development. CCE is currently working with a group of faculty from throughout the University of Minnesota to create a more interdisciplinary focus for the CAPS program and revise certificate requirements. Plans are underway to offer the first two courses (SW5481: Research and Theory and SW5482: Program Development, Implementation and Evaluation) online in a web-based format during Fall and Spring semesters, 2002-2003.
