SUMMER LANGUAGE COURSES / EXAMINATIONS ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE Students with a limited knowledge of English are required to take a course in Basic English (the English Ulpan) during the summer. Classes are held from June 28 to July 31, 2011, 9:00 AM – 1:15 PM. NOTE: The English Ulpan begins four weeks before the Hebrew Summer Ulpan. Dormitories are NOT available during the English Ulpan. Satisfactory completion of the English Ulpan is a condition for continuing in the Preparatory Program- Mechina. Students who do not receive a minimum final English grade of 75 cannot continue in the Mechina program. HEBREW LANGUAGE COURSE (Summer Ulpan) The Summer Ulpan is an integral part of the Preparatory Program Mechina and, as such, it is compulsory for all Preparatory Program students regardless of the Hebrew level they achieved on their Placement Test. The Summer Ulpan takes place from August 2 to September 26, 2011. The Summer Ulpan is equivalent to a semester of language study. The Ulpan grade is 25% of the final autumn semester Hebrew grade. Satisfactory completion of the Summer Ulpan is a condition for continuing in the Preparatory Program Mechina. Students who do not receive a minimum final Ulpan grade of 70, cannot continue in the Preparatory Program. NOTE: Level Aleph courses are not given during the year. Therefore, students who do not reach level Bet will not be allowed to continue their studies in the Preparatory Program. To assist those in the lower Aleph levels, Ulpan studies are extended until the beginning of the academic year. Please refer to the Financial Information Guide for all fees. Absolute beginners are advised to learn the Hebrew alphabet over the Internet: http://overseas.huji.ac.il/academics.asp?cat=178&in=24 Mathematics No summer courses are offered for Mathematics. All students are required to sit for the Mathematics Placement Examination which will take place on September 6, 2011 at 1:00 PM. This exam serves two purposes. First, receiving a high score on this exam will allow you to be placed in the Exact and Life Sciences Trend, if and only if you choose this trend. Second, for students who wish to study in the Humanities and Social Sciences Trend, receiving a high score on this exam can allow you to be "exempt" from taking Probability during your Mechina year. You do NOT need to pass this exam to be accepted to the Mechina.
