COURSE SYLLABUS
Instructor: Nichole Bell, RN
Course Description: Introduction to Healthcare Science is a foundation course for the biomedical
science pathway. Emphasis is placed on hands-on skills and knowledge applicable to many health care
disciplines. Through a series of individual tasks and team activities students learn the importance of
goal setting, personal responsibility, problem solving, critical thinking, and employability skills while
integrating core academic subjects.
Teaching Strategies: Include but are not limited to cooperative learning, lecture, individual practice,
independent study, whole class discussion, demonstrations, presentations, research, skills labs, and
guest speakers.

Assessment Plan: Assessment methods will include; but is not limited to, group work, written exams,
tests and quizzes, oral presentations, and projects. Students take notes during class lectures and
maintain a course notebook for periodic checks. Student personal computer use during lecture requires
instructor’s permission. Nine weeks test will be given.
Class Policies and Expectations Please respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher, other
teachers, visitors and school property. All students are expected to adhere to all policies and
procedures in the handbook.

Course Requirements: Each student will…
1. Have a 3 ring binder notebook, brought to class daily.
2. Participate in classroom activities and lab activities.
3. Prepare and turn in assignment by the due date.
4. Take notes and review the notes daily.
5. Make up missed assignments and tests for excused absences only.
6. Work in cooperative group activities.
7. Bring other necessary tools to class, such as pencil, pen, paper, etc.
Class Rules and Expectations: Each student will…
1. Bring a positive attitude to class and come to class prepared to work.
2. Daily come to class as scheduled, on time, seated and ready to learn.
3. Maintain professional dress and attitude.
4. No cell phones or electronic devices.
5. Complete restroom breaks prior to coming to class.
6. Discard food and drink prior to entering the classroom.
7. Make up any work missed due to an excused absence.
8. Leave your classroom area neat and clean.
9. Handle equipment with teacher permission ONLY!!
Tardy Policy: If a student is late for class he/she will be sent to the office to get a tardy slip. The
student is responsible for any missed work due to being tardy.
Textbook
The textbook is a class set and will not be taken out unless the student has permission from the
teacher.
Content:
Unit 1: Healthcare Systems
Unit 2: Careers in Health Care
Standard: The student will analyze healthcare delivery system models and the role of health
professionals within each given model.
Unit 3: Personal Qualities of a Health Care Worker
Standard: The student will describe the attributes of effective teamwork and leadership.
Unit 4: Legal and Ethical Responsibilities
Standard: The student will demonstrate integration of accepted ethical practices with respect to
cultural, social, and ethnical differences within the healthcare classroom and all clinical environments
utilized.
Standard: The students will explain the legal responsibilities, limitations, and implications of their
actions within the healthcare delivery setting.

Unit 5: Medical Terminology
Standard: The student will utilize the elements of medical terminology to communicate information,
data, and observations.
Unit 6: Anatomy and Physiology
Unit 7: Human Growth and Development
Unit 9: Geriatric Care
Standard: The student will compare and contrast the life changes from conception throughout the
lifespan as it relates to all growth and developmental needs.
Unit 8: Cultural Diversity
Standard: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of diverse social, religious, ethnic, and cultural
communities.
Unit 11: Computers in Healthcare
Standard: The student will communicate effectively orally and in writing applying academic
knowledge in healthcare science communication.
Unit 12: Promotion of Safety
Standard: Student will maintain a safe work environment and prevent accidents by using safety
precautions and/or practices including adherence to hazardous labeling requirements and compliance
with safety signs, symbols, and labels.
Unit 13: Infection Control
Standard: The student will practice preventive health behaviors personally and professional with
clients.
Standard: The student will utilize the principles of infection control.
Unit 14: Vital Signs
Unit 15: First Aid
Standard: The student will demonstrate basic life support techniques on an adult victim while
utilizing personal protective equipment devices and adhering to all standard precautions within OSHA
guidelines.
