2014-15
I. Textbook/materials used in class:
Universal permission slip for community
Photo permission form
2 Children’s books as individually arranged with Barb Mills or Carlotta Han (if wanting a
grade for class otherwise class is a pass/fail)
II. Course expectations:
This class is graded on attendance and effort.
Each student will also get the opportunity to go out in the community with students as
appropriate to their class period and semester
III. Brief summary-description of the course
This is a class that gives non-disabled students a chance to work with our medically
fragile students and learn all of the wonderful things they are able to do. This is an open
and welcoming environment where we encourage students to ask questions and be open
about how they are feeling both with the students in our class and life in general. We
want the students to feel safe to come to us at any time.
You will have an opportunity to work with these students both in the classroom and
community (depending on what period you sign up for). This means that you may get to
go to Starbucks, bowling, Safeway, Fred Meyer, Deseret, and more!
IV. Assessment plan/strategies
There are no tests in this class
V. Procedures and expectations related to homework
If peer tutors want a grade for this class you are required to record audio recording of at
least 2 children’s books for no less than 50 pages of reading and must complete all books
even if it goes over 50 pages. You will also need to arrange a time to import the sound
into the books on the computer program “My Own Bookshelf.”
Points value: 50 (no partial points given-must complete assignment to get points)
VI. Criteria used to determine grades
Students will also be graded on attendance and participation. Students start the semester
with 100 points. If students come to class but are not willing to work, they will lose 3
points. Each absence costs a student 6 points. If a student misses 9 or more classes they
will lose credit with either grading option. (school policy). Graded option will only be
used at semester.
Graded Option:
100%-90%..........A
89%-80%............B
79%-66%............C
65%-51%............D
50%-00%............F
Pass/Fail Option:
100%-51%..........Pass
50%-00%............Fail
VII. Class expectations
Attendance:
If the absence is for medical reasons, the student can arrange to make up the time during
lunch or break for no loss of points. Students will be expected to make us the same
amount of time they missed. This means that if they miss a C day, they will need to
make up 50 minutes. IF they miss an A/B day, they will need to make up 110 minutes.
(We do not want students in our room if they are sick. The students we work with are
very fragile and cannot afford to be exposed to illness)
Behavior expectations:
Students are expected to work with the students in this class. We understand that
occasionally students decide to take this class and then realize that they are not able to
assist with the unique needs of our students. If the student meets with Barb or Carlotta,
we can discuss other options to meet the class requirements for the semester.
