Dear Park Street School Families, Monday, April 18th, 2011 To help celebrate Earth Day which is on April 22nd our Kindergarten classes will be participating in a ‘Litterless Snack and Lunch Challenge’ on Thursday, April 21st. On this day, your child is asked to pack a litterless snack and lunch where they throw nothing away after they are done eating. Below is some information about how to pack a litterless lunch. Simply, this means using reusable lunch containers rather than disposable bags/containers and single serving items. You will find that though it takes a little more work to pack the lunch, in the long run, these lunches are healthier for the environment and will save you money! TYPICAL LUNCH *Sandwiches in a plastic bags * Fruits and vegetables in plastic bags LITTERLESS LUNCH * Sandwiches and main dishes in a plastic/ glass reusable container * Fruits and vegetables in a plastic/glass reusable container * Single serving cups - yogurts, puddings, etc. * Buy in bulk and use reusable containers * Single serving snacks - nuts, chips, cookies, fruit bars, granola bars, etc. * Buy in bulk and put in reusable containers *Disposable drinks - juice boxes, pouches, cans, bottles and cartons *Use reusable beverage containers * Disposable cutlery - plastic forks and spoons *Paper napkins *Every day cutlery from home * Paper and plastic bags * Cloth napkins * Reusable lunch boxes Any attempts to make lunches more "litterless" is appreciated. Smarter choices are also preferred, such as recyclable containers or compostable items. The class will be monitoring the amount of "litter" that is collected from snacks and lunches during the day. Thank you for your support with our ‘Litterless Snack and Lunch Challenge’. Sincerely, The Kindergarten Team To better help our earth, help support litterless lunches everyday!
