PROGRESS REPORT FROM MAY 29TH 2011 TO DATE:
1. INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENTS:
a) Renovation of wall fence in the Eastern (Gandun Albasa) and western
(Tukuntawa) part of Audu Bako zoo
b) Re-construction of three large expanse cages in the zoo
c) Interlocking of about 3,000 m2 walkways within Audu Bako Zoo
d) Renovation of animal enclosures in primates and carnivores section
e) Construction of wall to demarcate children park and open air theater
f) Purchase and installations of modern children play toys in the
children park
g) Revamping of fish pond in the zoo
h) Re-development of the abandoned Botanical Garden and Arboretum
initiated by the Government in the first tenure
i) Purchased of specialized vehicle for loading and uploading of animal
cages for animal transportation and other purposes
j) Rehabilitation of animal enclosures of Elephant, Lion, Hyena etc and
other facilities for animals keepers and general public safety
k) Construction of perimeter wall at the New Zoological Garden,
Bagauda
l) Toyota Hilux was received from Cabinet Office
m) Purchase of one (1) Toyota Dyna pickup for Falgore Game Reserve
n) Renovation work/procurement of security gadgets and Ebola
control at the zoo (2014)
2. RESTOCKING OF AUDU BAKO ZOO
Audu Bako zoo was restocked with the following animals:
a) 3 numbers of Zebras were purchased were from Wildlife Park Sumo –
Bauchi State
b) A pair of Honey Badger
c) 2 pairs of Sandfox
d) 1 number of Bush Buck
e) 4 numbers of Gazelles
f) 9 numbers of Rock Python
g) 4 numbers of Cobra snakes
h) 3 numbers 4 horned Rams
i) 3 numbers Donkey
j) A pair of Genet cat
k) 1 number of Grey Duiker
l) A pair of Topi
m) A pair of Chimpanzee
n) 1 male Buffalo
o) Freezian Bull
p) 3 pairs of Peacock
q) 5 pairs of Geese
r) 10 female cows (for breeding purpose with the freezian bull
s) 2 pairs of Camels
t) 3 pairs Horses
u) A pair of wildest beast
OTHER ASPECTS OF RESTOCKING
Animal Exchange: A male Hippopotamus was received from National
Museum Niamey for an exchange with a pair Emu, a female Eland and
Rock Python from Kano zoo
There is also a plan between Kano Zoological and Wildlife Management
Agency and National Museum Niamey to capture the following animals;
Elephant, Giraffe, Roan antelope, Western Hartebeest, Waterbuck etc at
a later period.
A proposal was also made between Kano zoo and the National Museum
Niamey for construction of Musical Instrument Room and
installation/mounting of DINOSOUR models exhibition in the zoo.
ADMINISTRATION AND CAPACITY BUILDING:
a) Creation of Planning Research and Statistics Department
b) Some staff of the Agency were sent on training to acquire
certificates, Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas
c) Pan African Association of Zoos, Aquaria and Botanical Garden
(PAAZAB) annual registration was paid (done)
d) Kano Zoological Wildlife Management Agency attended the PAAZAB
general Annual Conference in South Africa
ACTIVITIES:
a) KAZOWMA participated in 2011 and 2013 Kano State Agricultural
show at Bagauda
b) Participated in 2011 and 2012 Kano State Trade Fair
c) Participated in 2011 and 2013 Christmas/New year celebration at
Gamji Park Kaduna
d) The upgraded zoo children play ground was commissioned by His
Excellency Engr. (Dr) Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso on 14/6/2012
e) Participated in 2012, 2013 and 2014 National Agric. Show at Karu –
Nasarawa State
f) Participated in 2012 Eid – el- Kabir Sallah celebration at Sokoto State
g) The period also records a high influx of students, general public visit
to the Zoo and Falgore Game Reserve
h) Participated in 2014 Kaduna International Trade Fair where the
Agency received The Most Functional Stand Award
i) Participated in 2014 Zamfara State Domestics Trade Fair where the
Agency received The best Tourism Attraction
