NATURE OF AGENCY/POPULATION SERVED Kaiser Permanente is a health maintenance organization that provides comprehensive medical and hospital services. The mental health needs of members are primarily served through the Outpatient Psychiatry Department, which offers a broad range of services. These include psychological and psychiatric assessment; individual, couples and family psychotherapy; medical management of psychotropic medication and crisis intervention. Group psychotherapy is also offered, through process-oriented groups or psycho-educational groups. The Department utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment with an emphasis on short-term, goal-oriented intervention. Clients include the entire age range, from infants to seniors. Interns will be allowed to balance their caseload to work with the populations in which they are most interested. A wide spectrum of diagnostic categories is represented. Although substance abuse may be an issue for some clients, most are referred to a related treatment unit in Orange County for chemical dependency. The cultural-ethnic-racial distribution and SES of our population are strongly representative of the county. DIRECT AND INDIRECT SERVICES Students will be involved in providing direct services in the areas of individual, couples/family and group therapy. They will also conduct intake interviews, and spend up to 4 hours per week in psychodiagnostic testing. There will also be the opportunity for a rotation of approximately 4 hours per week in the Family Practice Medical Group, working jointly with physicians and residents. Other available rotations include: chemical dependency, in-patient hospital, and community outreach within the surrounding neighborhoods and schools. THEORETICAL ORIENTATION Cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic, short-term models are most typically used. Interns are encouraged to have a variety of theoretical models, but must be willing to learn and work effectively in the short-term model.
