NATURE OF AGENCY/POPULATION SERVED
Kaiser Permanente is a health maintenance organization that provides comprehensive
medical and hospital services. The mental health needs of members are primarily
served through the Outpatient Psychiatry Department, which offers a broad range of
services. These include psychological and psychiatric assessment; individual, couples
and family psychotherapy; medical management of psychotropic medication and crisis
intervention. Group psychotherapy is also offered, through process-oriented groups or
psycho-educational groups. The Department utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to
treatment with an emphasis on short-term, goal-oriented intervention.
Clients include the entire age range, from infants to seniors. Interns will be allowed to
balance their caseload to work with the populations in which they are most interested.
A wide spectrum of diagnostic categories is represented. Although substance abuse
may be an issue for some clients, most are referred to a related treatment unit in
Orange County for chemical dependency. The cultural-ethnic-racial distribution and
SES of our population are strongly representative of the county.
DIRECT AND INDIRECT SERVICES
Students will be involved in providing direct services in the areas of individual,
couples/family and group therapy. They will also conduct intake interviews, and spend
up to 4 hours per week in psychodiagnostic testing. There will also be the opportunity
for a rotation of approximately 4 hours per week in the Family Practice Medical Group,
working jointly with physicians and residents. Other available rotations include:
chemical dependency, in-patient hospital, and community outreach within the
surrounding neighborhoods and schools.
THEORETICAL ORIENTATION
Cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic, short-term models are most typically used.
Interns are encouraged to have a variety of theoretical models, but must be willing to
learn and work effectively in the short-term model.

SUPERVISION AND TRAINING
There will be 2 hours of individual supervision and one hour of group supervision per
week. Students will spend the first half of the practicum working either at the Harbor
Corporate Park facility or at the Santa Ana facility where the focus in both locations will
be working with the adolescent and adult population. Half way through the practicum
the student will then switch to the opposite rotation. Dr. Oportot will be the primary
supervisor at the Santa Ana facility and Dr. Pollock will be the primary supervisor at the
Harbor Corporate Park facility. Training in the area of developmental assessment will
be provided at the Tustin Ranch facility as supervised by Dr Mena. Autism Spectrum
Disorder will be the focus of training with Dr. Mena. Interns will participate every other
Tuesday for the duration of the training year. Weekly group supervision will include all 3
supervisors and the facility will be determined at a later date. Additional training that is
open to all mental health professionals may also be available to students.
LENGTH OF TRAINING
Training will begin in July and continue through June for a total of 1,000 hours.
VACATION
Two weeks of vacation will be available.
STIPEND
There is currently no stipend for the coming year.
PREFERRED AND REQUIRED DAYS
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are the required days (with Tuesday and
Wednesday being of most importance re: supervision and the Family Medicine rotation).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
After receiving approval from the Division of Professional Field Training to apply,
contact Dr. Pollock. He would like applicants to prepare a summary of past clinical
experience, which should include the number and type of cases seen under
supervision. The information should indicate whether the cases were child, adolescent
or adult, individual, group or other and the number of test batteries completed. You will
also be asked to submit a sample psychological assessment report. He will give you
more specific details about these needs when you call for an interview.
