Give something back…volunteer in heritage!

Role

Family Learning Volunteer

Description

Somerset Heritage & Libraries Service runs an exciting programme of family learning activities at its sites throughout the year. These events provide an opportunity for parents/carers and children to learn together and include arts and crafts activities. We are looking for volunteers that can commit to helping at these events.

Tasks

Volunteer are required to:

help create the resources in advance of the events

demonstrate the activities to families

engage supportively with both parents and children to facilitate their learning time

help with setting up/clearing away resources

pass on information about other services and events we offer

 take people’s details for mailing lists

Skills

enthusiasm and willingness to help

good interpersonal skills

a desire to meet new people and make new friends

an interest in supporting and promoting the Heritage & Libraries

Service

the ability to commit to set dates in advance and communicate with the staff about availability

Benefits

The roles we offer may suit people wanting to give something back to their community, parents with children at school or people looking for skills development in education, playwork, child care or early years development.

Training

A full induction will be provided and you will be trained on all areas that will help you fulfil your role. You will be supervised and supported at all events. A

CRB check may be required but costs will be covered by the Somerset

Heritage & Libraries Service.

Hours

Family learning activities are usually ran at the weekends and would require the volunteer to commit to around 8 hours including a lunch break. It would be helpful if a commitment can be made for at least 6 months but this is not essential.

Location

Activities are held at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton, the Somerset Rural

Life Museum in Glastonbury, and occasionally at outreach events across the county. Resource preparation would take place at the Somerset Heritage

Centre in Taunton. Volunteers must be able to organise their own transport to and from the events.
