Department of Earth Science The Earth Science Department at Southern Connecticut State University offers a solid foundation in earth Science combined with specialized programs in geology, oceanography, meteorology, and environmental earth science. Students benefit from rigorous academic training and extensive hands-on field experience, gaining the scientific knowledge for careers or graduate study. The Department offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science with specialization in the following areas: Geology Southern’s program offers all of the requirements outlined by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS). Courses focus on geology from engineering, structural, to economic perspectives. Students also gain valuable training on equipment like spectrometers and petrography microscopes. Oceanography Southern’s program offers all the requirements outlined by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS). Students delve into areas like geomorphology, stratigraphy, and sedimentation, and engage in valuable field work in the rich environment of nearby Long Island Sound. Meteorology Students interested in meteorology gain a solid foundation in the principles of weather forecasting, using satellite and radar technology. Also covered are air pollution meteorology and analysis of world climates. Environmental Earth Science The Department offers this specialization to provide students an overview of environmental concerns and land use, with courses focusing on such environmental areas as soil science, air pollution, hydrology and geologic factors that influence engineering practice.
