Corinne M. Salada The Graduate Center, CUNY 365 5th Ave New York, NY 10016 corinne.salada@gmail.com (518) 727-4334 Dear Search Committee: I am pleased to recommend Sarah Mauro for a position at your school. I worked with Sarah at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for two years, and during that time Sarah demonstrated several qualities that make her highly qualified for a music teacher position position. I was able to observe these characteristics through our experience as co-teachers of “Music 100: Music Appreciation.” Not only did Sarah lecture and teach discussion sections regularly, but she also played a vital role in the development of the course curriculum and materials. Sarah continually went above and beyond what was expected of her by offering creative ideas for teaching various classical music concepts and by being conscientious of her students’ learning needs. One of Sarah’s strongest assets is cultivating an appreciation of the arts in her students. She is dedicated to helping her students make connections between the arts and their own lives. I witnessed this particularly in how Sarah often posed questions in lectures that not only addressed a specific concept, composer, or musical work but also opened up a broader discussion about the role of the arts in today’s society. Sarah has held other positions that also demonstrate her creative and open-minded approaches to teaching and curriculum development. She designed and taught a songwriting course at the Warner Theatre’s Summer Arts Program in Torrington, CT and programmed and taught children’s activities as an intern in the Education and Community Programs department at The Hartford Symphony Orchestra in 2009. Sarah’s diverse experiences in teaching and community outreach make her a versatile educator. Her planning skills, ability to communicate and work well with others, and enthusiasm make her delightful to work with. Overall, Sarah Mauro is an excellent candidate for a music teacher position. Based on her curriculum development skills, passion for teaching, and exceptional character, I strongly and without hesitation recommend her for this position. Sincerely, Corinne M. Salada
