VCE Geography Unit Three Local Resources:
Comparisons Between Lake Based Parks and Reserves in the
Hobson’s Bay Region.

To compare regional parks and reserves which are based on lakes with the local resource
“Newport Lakes”.
To gain an understanding of the variety of reserves based on lakes within Hobsons Bay and
detail their Geographical Characteristics ,their facilities and the recreational
opportunities they provide.
To gain some insight into the complexities of managing these lake based parks and reserve for
sometimes conflicting needs.
To gain a appreciation of the importance of these lake based parks and reserves historically
and ecologically.
To develop observation and data gathering skills.





larger scale.

Site Two-CHERRY LAKE, ALTONA
Cherry Lake is a popular place
for weekend barbecues and for
daily walks. The lake, which is
managed by Melbourne Water,
is a flood retarding basin
created in the 1970’s to help
prevent flooding of the rapidly
expanding Altona residential
area.

Site Three-
JAW BONE RESERVE
Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve is
situated eight km from the heart of
Melbourne and adjacent to Williamstown,
the first permanent settlement in Port
Phillip Bay. The Jawbone Flora and Fauna
Reserve consists of open grasslands for
passive recreation, two wetland lakes, the
salt marsh and mangrove conservation
area, Wader Beach and the Kororoit Creek.

PAISELEY PARK
Paisley Park is the major sporting park in
Hobsons Bay and includes a gymnasium,
swimming pool, golf course, premier
league soccer facility, bowling club,
badminton centre, miniature railway and
lacrosse fields.
