Individual Placement Description
Placement
F2 in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
The department
The department of Gastroenterology is made up
of 7 consultants, 1 associate specialist, 3 SpRs,
1 CT1, 1 F2 and 2 F1s. There is a ward based
team on the base ward of Sidmouth, which
admits a full range of Gastroenterology including
acute GI bleeding, acute and chronic liver
disease, inflammatory bowel disease and
patients requiring specialist nutritional input. In
addition approximately 50% of patients will have
acute general medical problems, thus exposing
the trainee to a good mix of specialist and
general medicine. There are specialist nurses in
inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, PEG
feeding and parenteral nutrition and a counsellor
for IBD patients. There is an infusion service
attached to the ward.
All F2 Doctors will generally be ward based
during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to
deliver the daily medical care to all the patients
on their ward, in conjunction with the other
members of the team. This will involve the
general clerking of patients admitted, putting into
practice a management plan agreed with senior
doctors and ensuring that patients under their
care are safe and reviewed regularly.
During the 2 months spent on the Clinical
Decision Unit it is expected that the F2 will be
exposed to a full range of acute medical
emergencies, and through such exposure, and
teaching opportunities will start to develop there
medical skills, including practical procedures,
appropriate to acute medicine
The overall educational objectives of the F2 year
are to provide the trainee with the knowledge,
skills and attitudes to be able to
 Take a history and examine a patient
 Identify and synthesise problems
 Prescribe safely
 Keep an accurate and relevant medical
record
 Manage time and clinical priorities
effectively
 Communicate effectively with patients,
relatives and colleagues
 Use evidence, guidelines and audit to
benefit patient care
 Act in a professional manner at all times

Sidmouth Ward. Royal Berkshire Hospital,
Reading, RG1 5AN. The Royal Berkshire
hospital is a large district general hospital
covering a catchment population of 550,000.
All major specialities are provided apart from
cardiothoracic, hepato-biliary and neurosurgery. The placement will currently involve
2 months on this ward and 2 months on the
Clinical Decision Unit admitting acute
Medical patients. It thus provides an
excellent mix of general and speciality
medicine

Main duties of the placement
The F2 doctor is responsible with other staff for
the ward care of patients, contributing to a
management plan for each ward patient and the
maintenance of the patient’s medical record.
They will have an opportunity to work with the
consultants in outpatients clinics for one session
a week.. They are expected to attend the
structured teaching programmes provided by the
Departments of Medicine and Gastroenterology.
This
includes
X-ray
meetings
and
Gastroenterology seminars which occur weekly.
The doctor is also encouraged to complete an
audit whilst on this placement.
