Where?) 1 point = Visual documentation of the site (drawing and photographs) 1 point = Proposed improvement/changes to the site 1 point = Clear explanation of proposed changes and why 1 point = Additional, relevant information in order to better understand the site 2-4+ pages in length including drawings Part II – Field Work, Acquiring an Informant: 1 point = Identification of informant 1 point = Explanation of why informant will be a good source of information 1 point = Description of process of finding/identifying informant 1 point = Description of rapport or quality of relationship between you and informant 1 point = Additional, relevant information in order to better understand informant choice 1-2 pages in length Part III – Developing Taxonomies and the Emic Point of View: 1 point = Vocabulary list 1 point = Definition of terms in vocabulary list 2 points = Taxonomies- be sure they are graphically organized to correspond with the informant’s logic 1 point = Additional insights, or particularly good style, with correct grammar, sensible sentence structure. Again no more than 5 errors; one to five corrections = 1/2 point deduction. More than 5 = 0.Additional, relevant information to better understand vocabulary and taxonomies 5-10 pages in length depending on the information you extract from your informant and how you present your taxonomies Part IV – Literature Review as the Etic Point of View; How the Emic and Etic Compare and Contrast: 1/2 point = 10 sources for Bibliography (max. 2 from internet; min. 8 from library/book/journals). (Less than 10, but more than 5 will equal 1/4 point.) (Less than 5 = 0 points) 1/2 point = Annotations (1-2 sentence summaries for each reference) are presented 1/2 point = Content of annotations clearly relates to topic area (directly or indirectly) 1/2 point = Bibliographic "style" (e.g. Chicago) is consistent in presentation/format 1/2 point = Description of the emic point of view 1/2 point = Description of the etic point of view 1/2 point = Description of your personal observations and point of view 1/2 point = Explicit discussion of how these points of view compare & contrast 1/2 point = Well-written, no typos or misspellings, language-sentence structure is sensible, correct grammar. 1 to 5 corrections = 1/4 point. More than 5 = 0. 5+/- pages in length Part V – Program Development and Redesign: 1 point = New/revised program described by combination of words and visual images to show desired activities, separations, adjacencies, moods, and any other spatial character 1 point = Revised plan/concepts for new or revised setting or physical environment. Revised/new plan/concepts to be based on your new knowledge including that gained from informant/s and literature review. 1 point = Comment/s on similarities and/or differences between Ethnography Part I (your plan of proposed improvements/initial vision) and this (Ethnography Part VI) plan/concept. Also, answer the question as to whether your initial design/vision (Ethnography Part I) would have satisfied the emic perspective that you have now gained? Your answer to this question is to include Why? or Why Not? and How? 1 point = Overall visual quality of your program and plan presentations for this assignment. 1 point = For particularly good style of writing, with correct grammar, sensible sentence structure. Again, one to five corrections = 1/2 point deduction. More than 5 = 0 points. 3-5+/- pages in length Part VI - Poster: 1 point = Inclusion of cultural knowledge, i.e. most important taxonomies 1 point = Summary presentation of program and design 1 point = Visual drawings and photos included 1 point = Poster communicates well (what, where, how) 1 point = Effective, creative, achieved presentation quality within format required, no typos or misspellings. Part VII – Final Paper: The grading of Assignment VIII will include a total of 10 points that will be attributed according to completeness, overall quality, format, creative/presentation, and all previous revisions/corrections made. You may add images/visuals and/or narrative descriptions to your previous assignments as you wish or as recommended by your GSI. The report is to be bound or stapled in 8-1/2 x 11 booklet format with cover/title including your name, GSI, and section; and is to include Ethnography Assignments I-VI, separated/organized as sequential Chapters or Sections. Ethnography Assignment VI (Poster) is to be reduced to fit the 8-1/2 x 11 format. Size reduction of this assignment can be done in one of several ways: by taking a digital camera image of the work and printing out/reproducing the image at 8-1/2 x 11, OR if poster is created on vellum/trace this can be reduced at Ink Stone after de-mounting from the 24"x36" board; OR by photocopying the poster in a series of separate pieces. The reproduced poster image/s can be black and white; and each word in its reduced state DOES NOT have to be readable. 15-20 pages in length 2
