ROUTE JUNCTION LOCATION Please provide road name(s) PROBLEM Your observations PROPOSED SOLUTION What measures would help traffic flow? A57 Sheffield Parkway From Richard Wildgoose (Forum member) Sheaf Square From Paul License (Forum member) Inbound junction with Inner Relief Road From Andy Sturrock (Forum member) Left turn from Inner Relief Road onto outbound Sheffield Parkway From Mac Millard, (Forum member) Traffic lights on Parkway, right turn to Cutlers Gate Slight congestion at rush hour times morning and evening Sign posts more visible at approach Inbound traffic has to stop to cross outbound Parkway carriageway. Too few vehicles able to clear junction at a time. Tunnel to allow continuous flow from Parkway to Inner Relief Road. Traffic signals prevent free-flow from IRR onto Parkway As part of the outbound widening works above, install a dedicated free-flow left turn lane from IRR onto outbound Parkway. This will reduce queuing on IRR. A large bush at the right turn obscures the view for motorists and means that when the lights turn green, it is not possible to check if motorists are coming through from the other direction on a red. Removal of the bush would give motorists a full view of the junction and allow them to move away quickly and safely. I have reported this to Streetforce on a number of occasions but no action has yet been taken. From Richard Wildgoose Prince of Wales Road roundabout From Andy Sturrock Junction with Mosborough Parkway From Richard Grindrod (Forum member) Mosborough Parkway (Out of town) Asda slip road to the roundabout to Mosborough and Ring Road (RG) Queuing traffic to get across roundabout to get on A57 Traffic lights AM peak, volume of traffic entering Sheffield Parkway from Mosborough Parkway disrupts mainline flow. This junction is overcapacity. Widen Sheffield Parkway to three lanes inbound as far as Park Square. Significant lengths of three lane width surfacing already exists and construction of extra sections would be a simple task. Making the extra lane a 24/7 bus lane would be a stupid waste of resources, peak period only bus lane required – given that almost no buses use this route anyway, the public transport desires of the Council notwithstanding. Outbound widening to Mosborough Parkway would also be useful and logical. Queuing particularly around 4pm through to 6pm Scrapping of the small roundabout in – tail back to Parkway. favour of a flow system Queuing due to excessive traffic from the Prince of Wales roundabout towards Mosborough/Motorway Introduce filter left onto the Mosborough Parkway to bypass the roundabout. A6102 Sheffield Outer Ring Road A61 Inner Relief Road From Richard Wildgoose Attercliffe Common roundabout Prince of Wales Road (Handsworth Road at Darnall) (RW) From Andy Sturrock Upwell St/Holywell Rd/Carlisle St East A long delay at traffic lights Need altering in sequence Narrowing to the railway bridge in both directions Widening the bridge to take two lanes in each direction A simple signalised crossroads that has queuing on all approaches during peak periods. Obviously overcapacity. From Richard Grindrod New road? Corporation Street into A61 and to Riverside From Paul License Shalesmoor, Corporation Street, Nursery Street, Wicker From Andy Sturrock Corporation Street /Nursery Street Too many traffic lights in one spot Widen all approaches (land purchase required). Consider a roundabout with part-time signals NOT full time signals as at the Upwell St/Brightside Lane rbt – the signals there cause unnecessary disruption outside of peak periods. Use of more filter lefts rather than traffic lights Corporation Street /junction with clockwise IRR (AS) Traffic queuing at series of lights. Redesign to replace lights with roundabouts or reduce lights and improve sequencing. New construction has reduced a peak period three lane one way street to only two lanes, causing a reduction of capacity for clockwise IRR traffic. At the bridge the carriageway is three lanes wide, so why not have three lanes prior to this point? Traffic on Corporation Street coming from West Bar roundabout appears to get a much longer green period than the IRR, causing queuing on clockwise IRR. Coupled with the number of Widen the clockwise IRR to three lanes on this short section by narrowing the central reserve and/or nearside footway. Adjust signal timings. The timings on this section of IRR are still not optimal. Confirm that the signalised pedestrian crossing is linked to the other signals Nursery Street to Wicker clockwise (AS) From Paul License Inbound crossing point with the Wicker From JohnLashmar (Forum member) Inner Relief Road, under the railway bridge at the junction of Savile Street, left turn to Spital Hill From Mick Wardle, (Forum member) All traffic junctions from Parkway to junction with A61 Hoyle Street All traffic junctions from Hoyle St roundabout to the Parkway (MW) signals after this junction up to the Nursery Street junction (see above) but also the signalised crossing immediately after the Corporation Street/IRR junction, this greatly disrupts the flow of traffic on IRR. There is a short length of only two lanes width, with a very wide central reserve. and reduce the amount of time given to pedestrians at peak periods. Traffic unnecessarily delayed on both the Inner Relief Road and Wicker Widen to three lanes, by reducing central reserve width, thus increasing capacity. Short tunnel under Wicker to avert need for traffic to stop. The wide footway on the left hand side means that straight on traffic in the nearside lane at the signals blocks off the left turn up Spital Hill. This blocking is a source of frustration and unnecessary congestion. An easy and not too expensive solution is to cut back the width of the footway, so that there is extra capacity on the route out of Sheffield towards Don Valley and Spital Hill. Contrary to what we were told at our first Reschedule the lights to do what was meeting, traffic leaving The Parkway and stated at the first meeting travelling towards Penistone Road DOES NOT get green lights if travelling at 30 mph. I have taken this route numerous times at varying times of the day and at weekends. Traffic invariably gets a red at The Wicker and the following junction and then one at Corporation Street. This causes unnecessary stop- start motoring and significantly increases pollution. Comments as above. Comments as above. A61 Penistone Road From Mick Wardle Hoyle Street roundabout and bus gate traffic lights running out of town towards Hillsboro Right turn to Morrisons going into town (MW) Proposal to stop right turns out of Morrisons (towards town) (MW) From Richard Wildgoose Traffic lights at Bradfield Road From Mick Wardle Bradfield Road junction Into town 1. Traffic lights on the island do not change fast enough after those at the end of Gibraltar Street have gone green. This increases pollution. 2. Once these do change, the next set at the bus gate from Langsett Road go to red and stop the traffic that has just started moving - MADNESS! 3. Traffic then faces lights changing to red some distance in front and then greening just slowly enough to slow the traffic to a near stop. This increases pollution. Far too much demand for this turn. Friday at 4.30 the queue stretched back to Beulah Rd. Once again Penistone Road reduced to one lane. Beware! Have you really calculated how many vehicles you will be asking to go use the right turn in front of Owlerton Stadium? The right turn bay is very small and you may well end up creating another queue which tails back, blocks the junction and reduces Penistone Road outbound down to one lane. Resequence lights and reprioritise the traffic flowing along the main road. 1. Extend the right turn bay (difficult). 2. Increase the right turn time at key times. Some very careful and thorough computer modelling needs doing here. It could be a non- improvement. Need speeding up to keep traffic flowing. The “improvements” at Hillsboro have, as predicted, caused major tailbacks down Bradfield Road which spills onto Penistone Road, reducing it to one lane. 1. Make both of Bradfield Road’s lanes available for straight on traffic. 2. Rigorously enforce parking restrictions on Bradfield Road; do not allow disabled badge parking on this road. From Paul License Junction with A6101 Holme Lane / Bradfield Road From Mac Millard Herries Road joining Penistone Road A6102 Middlewood Road From Richard Grindrod Roundabout at Leppings Lane From Richard Wildgoose Halifax Road and Penistone Road roundabout From Mick Wardle Junction with Penistone Road From Paul License Hillsborough TramGate From Richard Grindrod Wadsley Lane into Leppings Lane From Mick Wardle Junction with Wadsley Lane Very heavy congestion from about 8:30 am to 9:30 am due to amount of traffic Better timing on lights to allow traffic flow. Motorists joining Penistone Road from Herries Road at peak times are often tailed back a considerable distance up Herries Road. This appears to be when they have the lights on go the junction becomes filled with traffic from Penistone Road. Volume of traffic from Leppings Lane into roundabout causes severe congestion in that road. Long delays at rush hours morning and evening. Perhaps a review of traffic light timings on and around this junction, and markings on the road informing motorists from Penistone Road to keep clear. Cars parking in front of the last five houses on Parkside Road make the approach to this junction just one lane. This significantly reduces the flow across this junction within the timing allowed. Problems already well documented, one problem has been cured by the expense of creating others. Long queues backing up Wadsley Lane. Prohibit parking in front of the houses. Investigate parking bays on the car park across the road 1. Timings are wrong here. Traffic coming along Middlewood Road from Hillsborough is allowed to fill up the space in Leppings Lane and the 1. Re time the lights. 2. Get the ‘state of the art’ signalling software (which I was told about Provide pure filter left lanes in all directions with hatching and use of better markings overall Better signs at all four corners and better marking. Traffic restrictions through tramgate reduced to rush hour/peaks only. Take out the traffic lights and install give way. Junction with Parkside Road (MW) lights at the Leppings Lane /Catch Bar Lane junction don’t green early enough for these vehicles to have moved before traffic at Wadsley Lane gets a green at their set of lights. Result is that traffic which wants to go both onto Leppings Lane and Catch Bar Lane cannot get onto the first bit of Leppings Lane as it is blocked. The narrowing of the road to facilitate pedestrian crossing (even though this is controlled by signals) exacerbates the problem. 2. Supertram causes the lights at the bottom of Wadsley Lane to miss a sequence when it goes through towards town. I have been complaining about this for 10 years. It significantly increases congestion and pollution up Wadsley Lane. Traffic should not be allowed to turn right at the top of Parkside Road onto Middlewood Road. Many vehicles coming along Leppings Lane and wishing to turn right onto Catch Bar Lane and onto the A6102 instead turn left onto Catch Bar Lane then right up Parkside Road and then right again at the junction with Middlewood Road in an attempt to get onto the A 6102 faster. Unfortunately when they turn right the junction only holds three cars and they are always faced with a red light. The fourth car then blocks the junction and stops traffic coming off Penistone Road which wants to get up Wadsley Lane. This is a significant cause of congestion and the solution is easy. There is absolutely no need for a right turn at the top of Parkside Road. incessantly when I complained) upgraded so that it does its job properly. 3. If 2. cannot be done then programme the signals to miss out Middlewood Road outbound for one sequence instead of Wadsley Lane. Prohibit right turns at this location. A61 Chesterfield Road (From Paul License) Queens Road/ Charlotte Road Junction Traffic backs up badly – not enough priority given to main road. Hardly any congestion on the minor Charlotte Road. More priority needed at lights for main road traffic. Heeley Bridge (PL) 3 lanes go into 2 at bottleneck. Traffic also backs up Broadfield Road. From Richard Grindrod Scarsdale Road traffic lights Rush hour lane causes chaos to outward bound traffic in afternoon. From Paul License Abbey Lane Bottleneck at Abbey Lane Junction due to right filter on southbound carriageway and bus gate on northbound carriageway. Needs extra lane over Heeley Bridge. Extend traffic flow system on Queens Road up London Road and Chesterfield Road/this could then have a fast lane for buses bikes and car share scheme. Removing lights completely at Heeley Bridge would be a major improvement. No right turn from Broadfield onto London Road would also help. Introduce tidal flow out of town – scrap the island with lights on the Woodseats side (use hanging lights instead – USA style) and allow traffic from the top of Woodseats Road use the right turn by Farmfoods. Remove right filter from A61 into Abbey Lane and remove bus gate near morrisons, so lift turning traffic into Abbey Lane doesn’t get caught in main A61 traffic through Woodseats. A625 Ecclesall Road A57 Manchester Road A6178 Attercliffe Road From Andy Sturrock I’m delighted to say that I rarely use this route but based on the few steering wheel chewing occasions when I have… From Richard Grindrod Between Summerfield Street and Hunters Bar roundabout From Paul License Hunters Bar From Richard Grindrod Sandygate Road and Lydgate Road From Richard Grindrod Lovetot Street to Staniforth Road Traffic Lights From Andy Sturrock Junction with Weedon Street Junction with Meadowhall Retail Park (AS) …dual it - just dual it, the whole length at least three lanes wide each way, with as few traffic signals as possible, OK? Just get on with it, don’t tell me you don’t have the cash, just get on with it! God help those who have to use it on a daily basis. A prime example of the inadequate joke that is Sheffield’s road network. Restricted lanes due to bus lanes. Introduce tidal flow as per Queens Road. Traffic queuing back towards town whilst bus End outbound bus lane after Berkley lane remains devoid of vehicles Precinct Waiting traffic on a staggered crossroads – with Introduce traffic lights. a restricted view of traffic coming from Broomhill. Due to the bus lane only and the traffic island at the end of Staniforth Road traffic is restricted and often in wrong lane – and there are still many vehicles using the “At any time” bus lane. Green period on Weedon Street very short, causing queuing at any time of day, often outside of peak periods. The timings of the signals at this junction greatly disrupt flows on the A6178 Scrap the “at any time” bus lane to normal rush hour times and get rid of the traffic island by introducing pedestrian crossing full width. Extend green period for Weedon Street. Consider stopping the right turns into/out of the retail park or adjust the signal timings to give more priority to the A6178. It is unreasonable to disrupt the flow of traffic on the public highway for a private retail development. A6109 Brightside Lane / Meadowhall Road Inbound junction with Meadowhall Retail Park (AS) From Richard Grindrod Jenkin Road From Andy Sturrock Meadowhall Road approximately between each end of Meadowhall Way Barrow Road junction with Meadowhall Road (AS) The lack of a dedicated left turn lane into the retail park, coupled with the presence of signals after the turn, causes queues on the A6178 Mainly the tailback from the traffic lights at Jenkin Road and Holywell Road – more to do with the restricted traffic lanes at the traffic lights at Upwell Lane/Holywell Road. Wide carriageway marked only as two lanes, with outbound traffic queuing PM peak Install a left turn lane into the retail park, removing the signals and install a Give Way to control flow. If the two sets of traffic lights and the road width were dealt with then more would use Holywell Road and thus alleviate Meadowhall Road? Remark as three lanes. Outbound traffic already forms two lanes where possible, so a formal marking would assist both road capacity and road safety. Due to the very short green period given to Barrow Road traffic (six seconds?), traffic frequently queues the full length of Barrow Road, all the way back to its junction with Tyler Street. Given the presence of the transport interchange car park, this does not encourage the use of public transport, due to the delays caused. Queuing traffic often does U-turns, presumably due to frustration at the length of delay – not a particularly safe manoeuvre. Adjust the signal timings at the junction. The signal timings at the access into the transport interchange car park are also poor, I’m not convinced that set of signals are working correctly either. Also shorten the splitter island on the Barrow Road downhill approach to the interchange. It’s already being over-run by traffic wishing to enter the car park in their desire to get there. From Mac Millard “Wild card” – Rutland Road junction any with Cookswood Road location not mentioned above (in Sheffield) This junction, especially at peak times, becomes difficult for traffic attempting to join Rutland Road. Where the lights on Cookswood Road allow traffic to turn left with the green arrow, traffic turning right has to wait for their green light. May be allowing traffic to turn right at the same time would then allow more traffic out of Cookswood Road. Then enable traffic turning right from Rutland Road into Cookswood Road, before allowing traffic to continue their journey up from Rutland Road. 1. Re time and reprioritise the traffic flow. 2, Sort out the “state of the art” tram signalling. From Mick Wardle Ripley St/Langsett Rd junction Traffic regularly queues way up Ripley Street when the flow across this junction is poor. Lots of dead road time is wasted prioritising other traffic that is just not there across the junction. The tram also significantly mucks things up as the programme is not sophisticated enough. From Andy Sturrock Rutland Road Wide carriageway with significant uphill queuing PM peak. Remark as three lanes (or even four? lanes). Would need to be made a clearway? From Richard Grindrod Richmond Road/Normanton Hill Immense queuing at peak times to get out of Normanton Hill due to the traffic waiting to turn from Richmond Road down the hill. Traffic lights with on demand signalling. From Paul License Junction of Abbeydale Road and Abbey Lane Queuing traffic. Urgently need a traffic filter system. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS From Mick Wardle I want to re state my comments above re the prioritisation of traffic on the new inner ring road. At the first meeting I clearly recall a statement that the philosophy was for traffic flowing along this road was to be given priority and that if it travelled at 30 mph it would find lights greening in front of it. My initial experience was the exact opposite of this and I alluded to that at our March meeting. I have paid particular attention to this since then and can categorically state that when travelling from the Hoyle St roundabout towards the Parkway or when travelling in the opposite direction what happens is the exact opposite of what was stated. Traffic is regularly stopped in order to let vehicles fro side roads onto the inner ring road. Two weeks ago my sister in law visited for the first time since the inner ring road was finished. I gave her new directions and she came up on a Friday, arriving at approx 3.15pm. The first thing that she said was to ask why the new road involved so much stop start motoring. She commented that after turning off the Parkway she was stopped at virtually every set of lights in order to let traffic from side roads onto the ring road. This exactly mirrors my experiences. I have completed both routes at various times of the day on both week days and week ends. The impression to a motorist is that of a determined effort to disrupt the flow. The current system cannot be the most efficient, in terms of both traffic flow and pollution. From Andy Sturrock You should be looking at ALL junctions in the city, with a view to at least remarking them to increase capacity and preferably identifying locations where simple widening/removal of islands can increase capacity. Either the new council is serious about improving the city’s woefully inadequate road network, or it isn’t. Which is it to be? I would also suggest that you make a concerted effort to ensure that all roadmarkings at signalised junctions are kept in good condition. The state of markings at some junctions (Rutland Road/Cooks Wood Road/Pitsmoor Road for example) is appallingly bad, with little if any effort being put in to keep these junctions up to standard. From Paul License Too many bus lanes – it was noticeable that, when the buses were on strike, the traffic flow in the city was greatly improved. Uncoordinated Utility work on roads – too many times a road will be partially restricted for work by one Utility company, only for it to reopen and then be restricted again shortly afterwards for another company.
