Fr. Victor Mallia a reminder that we are entering a season of fasting and penance. Pancakes originally became associated with Shrove Tuesday because they were a way to use up cooking fat and rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before the fasting season. We will keep the tradition of Shrove Tuesday by eating a delicious breakfast of pancakes, courtesy of the dedicated staff at the Breakfast Club in the church basement. All students are invited to enjoy pancakes, regardless of whether they go regularly to the breakfast club or not. Sister Margaret will keep the kitchen open a little later on Shrove Tuesday to make sure everyone enjoys this tradition. Many thanks Sister and to all your volunteers! Wednesday, February 18th marks the beginning of Lent, a period of forty days we set aside for prayer, fasting and doing good things for others. Here at school, we will begin the season of Lent by receiving ashes which Father Frank will bring to school. Parents are welcome to join th (Shrove Tuesday) at 9 am at us for Mass on the 12Our Lady of Fatima Shrine Church. Pastoral Team: During Lent, our daily prayers will focus on the ways in Rev. Fr. Victor Mallia which we can renew our commitment to living the holy Rev. Deacon Patrick Matthews life that Jesus asks of us. Students will be encouraged to 3170 St. Clair Avenue East give up something that distracts them from knowing (416) 757-2806 God. Students will also be encouraged to look for ways Email: olfatima@rogers.coim to help others. In this way, we prepare for Easter, that greatest feast in the Church when we celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead. St. Paul continues to be a vibrant school, with sports, outings, arts and a special overnight trip for our grade 7 and 8 students. This trip is valuable in many ways: physical education activities such as cross-country skiing in the fresh air north of Alliston, community living, prayerfulness, mindfulness, camaraderie and of course, late night talks while in their bunks! The students took responsibility for the cost of this trip by selling chocolate bars and almonds. Please support them by buying a bar for only $2.00. Chocolate will be sold on Feb. 6th and again on the 12th if we have any left! We appreciate your help very much. Of course, living in Canada, we expect to endure some cold days and recognize that, when dressed appropriately, we can enjoy funfilled, outdoor activities. Students are expected to come to school with all that they need to participate in outdoor recesses. Appropriate winter clothing includes: winter boots, a winter coat, snow pants, a hat, a scarf and warm mittens or gloves. All students are expected to have a pair of indoor shoes that may be left at school for the duration of the snowy/wet season. It is highly recommended that each student have an extra pair of dry socks in their backpack. Please be assured that on exceptionally frigid days, outdoor recess will be shortened or cancelled. However, it is our intention to ensure that the students receive opportunities for fresh air and exercise on a regular basis throughout the winter season. Flu Prevention: Please continue to follow and review with your child the Public Health recommendations to prevent the spread of the flu, including: Wash hands frequently. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or sleeve. Don’t share things that go in your mouth (i.e. cups, straws, water bottles, utensils, etc.) Keep children home if they are sick. Watch for symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and possibly vomiting or diarrhoea. Please do not send students back to school until they are feeling well and they have had no fever for at least 24 hours. Bus Cancellation/ School Closure: Inclement weather occasionally makes it necessary to cancel school bus services and/or close the school. These decisions are made at the school board level and are published as early as possible. Cancellation of school bus transportation or school closures due to inclement weather will be reported through the following vehicles: News release to all media outlets in Toronto (Listen for the Toronto Catholic District School Board) T.C.D.S.B. 24 hour information line: 416-222-8282 ext. 2873 Transportation Department website: http://www.schoolbus.to/c_ home.asp Please note that on some occasions transportation is cancelled but the school remains open. Please note also that, if transportation is cancelled this is in effect for the whole day; there will be no school bus transportation home for those who come to school via another means. The Virtue of the Month: The virtue for the month of February is ‘Love’. Our challenge is to teach the children how to show love, whether it is by showing compassion, generosity, selflessness etc. please help us by modeling this with your children at home. SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST Tuesday, February 17th: Our children will be treated to pancakes Shrove Tuesday. Of course, this does not take place without the help of many hands. Please mark the date on your calendar and encourage your children to come to school early and enjoy this special morning at the breakfast club. . PLEASE REMEMBER to post the monthly calendar in a prominent spot at home! 4), 2010–2011 SNACK/NUTRITION PROGRAM The morning nutrition program continues to be a hit! Last week, Ms Carmie and her volunteers prepared a turkey and vegetable soup from scratch. The kids loved it and ate seconds and thirds! A very special thank you to all the moms who help out every week. Our program got started with government funds but its survival depends on everyone’s contributions. $5 per month buys your child healthy and balanced snacks every day. You would be hard-pressed to provide a morning snack for so little money yourself! You may pay for the rest of the year as well if this suits you best. If you haven’t contributed yet, please make this a priority as we want to keep this good thing going. P Thi
