Weather, Fauna and Flora
The weather always changes. Climates have marked changes of weather type e.g. a
monsoon place has warm, cloudy, wet weather in summer and cooler, sunnier dry weather
in winter.
So the weather depends on the climatic zone of that place. We can identify the following
types of climate: tropical, dry, warm temperate, cold temperate, cold.
Flowers, plants and animals are adapted to the climate they live in. For example polar
bears have thick layers of fat to protect them from cold. In hot places animals can often
store water in their bodies, such as camels.
Slovakia lies in the temperature climatic zone. It means that there are 4 seasons;
every reason has about 3 months.
 Spring begins on 21st march. The trees blossom and forest animals wake up from a winter
sleep. The landscape turns green, and the days get longer, the weather gets warmer, but in
April the weather is still changeable.
 Summer is the warmest season, it begins on 21st June. It is dry and these are sunny days,
the days are longer and nights shorter. It is usually windy before a storm. Children in this
season don’t go to school, so they go to holidays with family.
 Autumn is a season of colours. The leaves become yellow, red and brown and fall down.
The days are shorter, the weather gets colder and it is cloudy and foggy, it is often misty all
day. Children like in this season flying a kite.
 Winter is the coldest season of the year. There is a lot of snow, the landscape is white.
People like going to the mountains and skiing. Rivers are frozen, and children like skating
on the ice, or they can sledge or make a snowman. However the adults are often unhappy,
because the streets are slippery and it is dangerous to use a car.
Human influences
The weather conditions change suddenly and the human activities have a very bad affect.
The most serious ecological problem is that our Earth is warming up. The North and South
Poles begin to melt and sea levels rise. This is caused by the greenhouse affect.
The growing numbers of cars on roads contribute much to air pollution. Factories
produce carbon-dioxide, dangerous compounds of sulphur. These get into the air. Acid rains
kill trees, or they get into the rain and make it infertile. Some factories are built near rivers
and they put their chemical waste into it.
People have intelligence, and for this reason they must solve these ecological
problems and rave this planet for future generations. Very important ecological
organizations are the Greenpeace and the Friends of the Earth. They try to make realize for
people the importance of the protecting the nature.
