A.
T-Shirt Proposal
Ron Patterson introduced Janet Filer, who presented the T-shirts she had had made to
celebrate the 60th anniversary of Fairlington Meadows. Ms. Filer detailed her experience
in working with a firm that specializes in these kinds of projects and displayed several
options. She offered to assist the Society in creating a T-shirt for the Society and agreed
to prepare a brief proposal for what this would require in the next meeting.
B.
Graphic Palette Concepts
Stephanie Greenwald presented her initial work on a graphic palette for the Society. She
explained that she began with several concepts, including a the four mission objectives,
i.e., preserve, protect, provide, and promote, and the possibility of developing seven
different icons, e.g., maple or oak leave, magnolia blossom, doorway arch, shutter, door
knocker, etc., to represent the seven villages. She displayed her color recommendations:
brick red, forest green, moss green, and sky/grey blue.
Motion Made and Seconded: To adopt the color palette recommended by Ms.
Greenwald. [Motion Passed]

November 1, 2003 60th Anniversary Celebration/Book Signing/Annual
Meeting
Ron Patterson reported that he had consulted with members on the recommendation that
two planned events, i.e., the 60th Anniversary celebration and the Fairlington at 50
republication book signing, be combined into a single event. Members confirmed this
decision, and Ruth Kerns, Jeanne Muller, and Stephanie Greenwald volunteered to cochair the event. Mr. Patterson noted that the North Fairlington Community Center had
been reserved for that date (4:00 – 6:00 pm). Members discussed the general outline of
activity for the event and publicizing the invitation.
Motion Made and Seconded: To approve expenditure of $480.00 to purchase a
1 page insert in the All Fairlington Bulletin to announce the event and invite
residents to attend. [Motion Passed]

Fairlington at 50 Republication
Ron Patterson reported that the Fairlington at 50 manuscript was close to being ready for
printing. He reviewed the bidding process and presented the bids and supporting
documents from three firms interested in doing the work.

for the printing of 1,000 copies of Fairlington at 50 at a cost of $4,820.00.

had been declined. Members discussed other options for acquiring the addresses of
Fairlington residents for the 60th Anniversary appeal.
IV.
Committee Reports
Ruth Kerns reported for the Historic Preservation Committee that North Fairlington
resident and Board member had donated his personal archive of All Fairlington Bulletins
and North Fairlington News. She explained that these had been delivered to the
Fairlington Collection at the Arlington County Public Library and were currently being
inventoried and copied.
Ms. Kerns reported that the Society had been invited to display artifacts and memorabilia
in a display case located in the Virginia Room at the main Arlington County Public
Library. She and Ron Patterson agreed to assemble and deliver a portfolio of Fairlington
documents for display.

Ron Patterson raised the question of how best to maintain an archive of website contents,
a question that had been presented to Judy Knudsen, Arlington County Public Library,
during her presentation at the 2002 Annual Meeting. Ruth Kerns agreed to followup with
Ms. Knudsen to determine the current standards of practice for archiving websites.
Ms. Kerns noted that the device required to turn on the light inside the Society’s North
Fairlington Community Center display case with the same switch that turns on the ceiling
lights had not yet been acquired and installed. Noting the currently constrained North
Fairlington budget, members discussed the possibility of paying to have this work done.
Motion Made and Seconded: To approve expenditure of up to $200.00 to pay
for the wiring required to light the Society’s display case simultaneously with the
ceiling lights at the North Fairlington Community Center. [Motion Passed]
Sandy Hodapp reported that the new historic district plaque would likely be installed in
the spring, 2003.
