FAIRLINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Meeting Minutes July 11, 2002 North Fairlington Community Center The Fairlington Historical Society convened a meeting of its Board of Trustees on July 11, 2002 to consider the following agenda: I. Minutes New Business o 60th Anniversary Celebration o Committee Reports o Financial Report Old Business: o Boundary Stone Minutes The minutes of the June 6, 2002 meeting were reviewed. Motion Made and Seconded: To approve the June 6, 2002 minutes. [Motion Passed] II. New Business A. 60th Anniversary Celebration Members discussed the 2003 60th Anniversary of Fairlington’s construction and developed an initial list of scheduled and proposed events that should feature commemorative activity and a Society presence: o o o o o o o o 2002 Fall Yard Sale October 24, 2002 Annual Meeting House and Garden Tour Fairlington at 50: 60th Anniversary Edition Publication Event 2003 Spring Yard Sale 2003 4th of July Parade 2003 Fall Yard Sale 2003 Annual Meeting FAIRLINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Meeting Minutes July 11, 2002 Page 2 Members also discussed the Society’s and others’ roles in creating an overall plan for 60th Anniversary celebrations, expressing the need to assure that all of Fairlington’s organizations and groups be invited to help shape the celebration. Terry Placek agreed to serve as the Society’s 60th Anniversary coordinator and representative to the 60th Anniversary Steering Committee, and to begin discussions of a general approach and plan with David Manning, who has expressed an interest, the leadership of the Fairlington Citizens Association, and appropriate others. B. Committee Reports Cindy Kunz reported on the first meeting of the Fundraising Committee, in which four general fundraising strategies were explored: o o o o Memberships Grants for special purposes and operating support Corporate and Individual Donations for special events and activities Sales of FHS branded items, e.g., t-shirts, mugs, etc. She explained that the committee was working on a matrix of events and activities, corporate and individual donation levels, and contribution rewards. This matrix will be used, along with general information about the Society in soliciting donations for 2003. The committee is working on generating a mast list of potential business contributors to include: all business and other concerns serving the community, i.e., Shirlington, Quaker Lane, and King Street; all Fairlington boards; and major contractors doing business in Fairlington and with its organizations. Ron Patterson reported that Terry Placek would now serve as the board’s representative to the Volunteer Committee, replacing Cindy Kunz who had agreed to manage the Fundraising Committee. Mr. Patterson also reported that the Architectural Integrity Committee and the Special Committee on Fairlington at 50 were scheduled to meet later in the month. Ruth Kerns reported that a new exhibit has been placed in the Society’s display case in the South Fairlington Community Center. Ms. Kerns and Ms. Kunz agreed to prepare a routine thank you letter for contributors of artifacts and memorabilia. FAIRLINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Meeting Minutes July 11, 2002 Page 3 C. Financial Report Sandy Hodapp presented a financial report and an operating statement (attached). She reported that the Society’s Certificate of Deposit would mature on August 3 and that a decision about its disposition was needed. Motion Made and Seconded: To roll over the Certificate of Deposit when it matures on August 3, 2002 for an additional six months. [Motion Passed] II. Old Business A. Boundary Stone Ron Patterson reported that he had picked up accumulated trash and had raked out the leaves surrounding the Boundary Stone, noting that the fence requires stripping and painting and that the commemorative DAR plate requires cleaning. He explained that long range plans for the widening of King Street may include placement of a sidewalk and possible movement of the stone. B. Other Matters Sara Dalcher presented revised logo designs prepared for the Society’s consideration by herself and a graphic design colleague. Sandy Hodapp reported that she was prepared to mail a postcard followup to her email membership solicitation. Terry Placek reported that the North Fairlington Board of Directors had approved the purchase of a curio cabinet to be placed in the North Fairlington Community Center and made available for Society displays. Members expressed their appreciation for Ms. Placek’s efforts to secure the case and display space for the Society. Ruth Kerns reported that the Burke & Herbert anniversary display is currently at the West Broad Street branch. IV.
