Saturday, May 5:
There were five teams in attendance. A and B division were each assigned their own fleet of five boats
and both divisions were sent out on the water together. Separate starts were run on the same course for
the two divisions. Sailors rotated on the water after every race. Racing started promptly at 10AM. The
breeze was a steady 8-10mph from the east. Five races were completed in each division before the
sailors were sent in for lunch around 12:35PM. A storm was detected during lunch and the sailors were
held on shore until 3:30PM. Once the storm had passed and conditions were considered safe, sailors
were sent back out with the first afternoon race beginning at 3:50PM. The breeze was 18mph and
lessened to 7mph by the end of racing. The final B division race was completed at 7PM. 10 races were
completed in each division. Racing was completed in one day.

May 30-31, 2012

Wednesday, May 30:
Teams arrived to cloudy skies, 77 degrees and a light rain this morning at Austin Yacht Club. Winds
were from the south-southeast at about nine knots. As the day progressed the skies cleared to reveal
sunshine on and off and temperatures soared to the high 80s and low 90s with south-southeast winds
staying around 10 knots. Eager sailors in A-division crossed the starting line before the gun in the first
race, causing the race committee to hail a general recall. The second start was a success and racing was
underway around 10:30 a.m. Teams are sailing in Club FJ’s on a windward/leeward course 4 legs long.
A-division completed eight races today while B-division completed six. There were a couple more
general recalls in the beginning of the day as it was a priority to sail to the right side of the course
where the wind and shifts were better making a good start at the pin difficult. The conditions today
were very nice and the breeze stayed pretty steady, 11 to 12 knots with not too much chop. The scores
are close with the top two teams, the College of Charleston and Connecticut College, only one point
apart, 70 and 71 points respectively. The University of Rhode Island and Harvard are tied with 89
points, "however, Harvard loses the tiebreaker. Dartmouth College is only two points behind Rhode
Island and Harvard with 91 points in fifth place.
Thursday, May 31:
The sailors arrived to temperatures in the 80s, partly cloudy
skies and a light 5-knot breeze from an easterly direction.
The first race of the day was the seventh race in B-division
in the Semi-Finals series around 9:30 a.m. CDT. Four races
were completed this morning in the Semi-Finals series, one
in A-division and three in B-division. The first race started
in light breeze. after four general recalls before getting
underway. When A-division took to the water the breeze
built to 8-10 knots with 12-knot gusts. As a storm cell
approached for the last two races of the Semis series the
wind continued to build to a steady 15 knots and then up to
25-30 knots from the northeast. About a dozen capsizes
littered the fleet as everyone worked hard to finish the last
race. The nine teams that qualified from the Semi-Finals
series.

Thursday, May 31:
The National Championships got underway just after 2 p.m. The storm had passed and racing began
under sunny skies in 5-7 knots of wind from the east-southeast. Over the next two sets of races the
wind began to die to eventually nothing after the first race in B-division. The sailors were sent in to
cool down from the hot Texas sun and wait for more wind to fill in. The wind came in from the north
at about 5-7 knots around 5 p.m. The conditions continued to be shifty with the wind cycling up and
down between 5 and 10 knots. At times the pin end was heavily favored due to left shifts, which made
it important for the sailors to find a hole at that end to be in the top of the fleet off of the line. Four
races were completed in A-division and two races were completed in B-division today in the final
series for the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s National Championship.
Friday, June 1:
Racing got underway around 10 a.m. in 5-6 knots of breeze
from the northeast. Temperatures were in the high seventies
to start the day. B-division hit the water first for races 3B and
4B. The sailors race on a windward/leeward course W4,
which has a downwind finish. Racing was postponed after
race 3B due to a lack of wind. The sailors were eventually
sent in to shore to wait for the breeze and take shelter from
the sun and heat. It became a waiting game and the
competitors did not head back out on the water until around 3
p.m. after a four-hour postponement. Race 4B had a general
recall, but the second start was all clear. The wind filled in to
about 7-10 knots from the southeast. Conditions continued to
be shifty, but the breeze stayed steady and Boston College
won the race with a nice lead over the University of
Michigan, Yale University and Georgetown University. Light
winds prevailed the rest of the day, 6-10 knots from a
Ellen Dubois, A Divison for
Michigan
southeasterly direction and the temperature was in the high
80s. Staying in velocity and in phase on the racecourse was
the name of the game as shifts continued to roll down the course, much like they did during
yesterday’s racing. Two races were completed in A-division and four races were completed in Bdivision.
Saturday, June 2:
The competitors arrived to nice breeze and partly cloudy skies, a pleasant change from the last three
days of racing where wind was a scarcity at times. Winds were coming from the south-southeast at
around 12-14 knots at the start of the day and as racing got underway around 9 a.m. CDT, the winds
fluctuated between 8-12 knots. The race committee was able to run seven races today in both A and Bdivisions completing the championship with 13 races total in A and B over the three days of the
regatta. While there was more wind today, gusts up to 14-16 knots from a southeasterly direction, the
same shifts "long persistent shifts" like the previous days, moved across the course. The shifts could
last for a whole upwind or downwind leg and if the sailors were not in phase with them they could gain
or lose places quickly depending on which side of the course they were on. Winning the Women’s
Championship title and the Gerald C. Miller Trophy was Boston College. Yale took second place
winning the New England Women’s Trophy. In third, four points behind Yale, winning the Ann
Campbell Trophy, was the University of Rhode Island. The two trophies for the winners of each
division have been awarded since 1974. Sydney Bolger ’12 and Rebecca Evans ’12 won the Madeleine
8
Trophy, awarded to the low-point A- division team and Morgan Kiss ‘15 with Urska Kosir ’15 and
Emily Billing ’13 with Amanda Salvesen ’14 won the Judy Lawson Trophy, awarded to the low-point
B-division team.

Wednesday, June 6:
Racing was postponed this morning due to not enough wind on the lake. The conditions were glassy,
hot and humid. When the wind began to come up teams had an opportunity to practice in the boats,
Club Flying Juniors (CFJs), quickly before racing got underway around 1 p.m. CDT. The wind was
around 9 knots out of the southwest. The competitors sail a windward/leeward course with four legs
(W4). The winds continued to cycle anywhere from three to 10 knots from a southwesterly direction.
The first two A-division races ran smoothly despite a protest between Boston College and the U.S.
Naval Academy in the second A-division race. Boston College was eventually disqualified from the
race for tacking too close in the zone. When B-division got started the winds lightened up causing a re-
12
start for their first race, but it filled in to about 6-8 knots and the committee started the race again. The
wind was shifty on the course and at times the fleet would spread out a lot especially if boats did not
get off the starting line well or if they missed the first shift. One other protest was filed today between
Old Dominion University and the New York Maritime College in the fifth A-division race resulting in
Old Dominion being disqualified. Twelve races total, six in each division were completed today.
Racing did not end until around 7:15 p.m. in 3 knots from the west-southwest. It was a long hot day on
the water for the competitors.
Thursday, June 7:
The racing was postponed in the morning until about 11:30 a.m. when A-division hit the water with 68 knots from the northeast; the temperature was around 80 degrees. A-division was able to sail two
races on flat water, however, by the time it was B-division’s turn to rotate in, the wind had died out
and racing was postponed again. After a false alarm where it looked like breeze would fill in around 2
p.m. and the boats started to head out, the race committee raised another postponement flag. Around
3:45 p.m. the wind looked promising and the B-division fleet headed out to start racing around 4 p.m.
The wind was coming from the north around 8-12 knots at the start of race 7B. The race committee
was able to run eight races total today, four in both A and B-divisions on a W4 course. The wind
continued to fluctuate and the conditions were shifty, as they have been over the last week of
competition. By 6:30 p.m. the winds were 8-10 knots out of the north-northwest and racing wrapped
up around 7:15 p.m. Georgetown University managed to hold onto their lead all day. They finished
yesterday’s racing 19 points ahead of second place and today they are 30 points ahead of Yale
University who is in second place. Georgetown was ranked number one coming into the ICSA
National Championships.
Friday, June 8:
Competitors arrived this morning around 9 a.m. and sailing was postponed for a lack of wind at 10
a.m. The weather was cloudy, hot and humid. Forty-five minutes later wind began to fill in and Adivision hit the water for their first race. The winds were about 3-5 knots out of the northeast. The
wind direction was similar to yesterday, but the shifts were long and spotty. Roger Williams University
won the first A-division race, 11 A and Harvard University won the next race in the set. B-division hit
the water for their first set of the day in a northeast breeze around 3-5 knots. The cloud cover was
shifting the wind around and race 13 in A-division faced the brunt of the unstable conditions. The race
was abandoned three times before the wind direction and speed held steady. The fourth try was a
success, but by
this time it was 4 p.m. and time in the event was running
out. This was the last race for A-division in the regatta.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison won the race by
about 43 seconds followed by Yale University and Tufts
University. The last race of the day and the event was 13B,
which had one general recall. Georgetown was leading the
race in the beginning, but was overtaken by Brown
University. Brown won the race followed by Yale and the
College of Charleston. Three races in each division were
completed today for a total of 13 in each division for the
regatta.

ICSA All America Team and Awards
A committee of coaches who represent the seven conferences in the ICSA selects the ICSA AllAmerica Team. For selecting the All-Americans the committee evaluates a competitor based on their
competitive record in inter-conference competition as well as conference and national championships.
The committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the
competition the record was achieved in, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, results
achieved with different crews, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners in past
years.
For All-American crew selections, the committee uses criteria similar to skipper selection, but also
considers: demonstrated leadership (may consider seniority), outstanding body mechanics and boat
handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she
sails.
The Everett B. Morris Trophy is awarded annually to the College Sailor of the Year for outstanding
performance at the highest level of sailing in the collegiate year. The trophy is named in memory of a
16
distinguished journalist who spent more than 30 years, as a yachting writer and editor. This year’s
winner, is Chris Barnard or Georgetown University.
The winner of the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy for best overall collegiate team is the College of
Charleston. The team with the most Fowle points, which are compiled results of the ICSA Women’s
Singlehanded, Men’s Singlehanded, Match Racing, Women’s Dinghy, Team Racing, and Coed Dinghy
National Championships, determines the Fowle trophy. Charleston was the 2012 winner.
The Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award is awarded annually to the Sportsman of the Year. The
trophy honors Robert Hobbs (MIT '64), past Executive Vice President of ICSA, past President of U.S.
Sailing(1992-1994), and former chair of the U.S. Sailing Olympic Committee. This year’s winner is
Sam Williams (Summit, N.J.), a graduating senior from Dartmouth College.
The Quantum Female Sailor of the Year. Sydney Bolger a senior from Georgetown University won the
honor this year.
