YALE UNIVERSITY’S BARROWS AND BELLING WIN COED SAILORS OF THE WEEK BRANFORD, CT - 9/13/09 - Yale University sailors Thomas Barrows ’10 and Blair Belling ’11 defended their home waters and won A division at the Harry Anderson Trophy Intersectional hosted by Yale. The duo faced high level competition and very shifty conditions throughout the weekend to edge out University of Vermont’s Clinton Hayes ’10 and Coco Solsvig ’10 by two points over twelve races. For their efforts, Barrows and Belling were named the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Coed Sailors of the Week. Conditions were three to eight knots with long shifts that could dramatically affect the outcome of the race. The traditional fall season opener honors long time college sailing supporter and ICSA Hall of Fame member Harry Anderson, Yale ’43. Yale won the event with Vermont and Brown second and third respectively. TUFTS UNIVERSITY’S SWANSON AND MARCHAND EARN WOMEN’S SAILORS OF THE WEEK HONORS CAMBRIDGE, MA - 9/13/09 - Tufts University sailors Catherine Swanson ‘11 and Mariel Marchand ‘13 were named the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Women’s Sailors of the Week for their strong performance in the first annual Antonia Shuman Trophy Women’s Regatta hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the Charles River. Swanson and Marchand were dominant over the twenty-four races, finishing in the top three in fifteen races and winning eight. The pair ended the regatta with a string of five first-place finishes in a row to win A Division by twenty-three points. The first annual regatta honors the first female Varsity Letter winner at MIT, Antonia Shuman, class of 1958. Tufts placed first with Connecticut second and Brown third. AROUND THE CONFERENCE In New England’s opening fall weekend, the Coast Guard Academy sloop team of Sam Ingham, Will Cotta, Rian Bareuther, and Geoff Single narrowly defeated the Connecticut College Camel team by winning the last race of the Pine Trophy Sloop intersectional at Coast Guard. In Maine, Tufts dominated the Penobscot Bay Open over Vermont and Salve Regina. In the Central Series at Tufts, Boston University bested Dartmouth and Tufts for the series win.
