Submission Guidelines At this time, we do not accept electronic submissions (e-mail or attachments). All submissions should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) and authors should submit only one genre per envelope. Due to increased submissions, we are no longer reading during the summer months (Postmarks from May 1 to August 15). We will hold on to your manuscript, but it may take us until late September to respond. Submissions should be typed, single-sided, and carefully proofread. Prose should be double-spaced. Poetry submissions should not exceed five poems; we don't mind long poems but we aren't likely to publish any "epics." Most fiction submissions have fewer than 6,000 words, though we have published longer work. We do consider unsolicited author interviews and other nonfiction. We also consider unsolicited translations but require a copy of the piece in its original language and your credentials. Include a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) for our reply and additional postage if you would like your manuscript returned. You should receive a reply in 1-3 months. If you are submitting the same work to another publication, please indicate this in your cover letter and notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. If we accept your work, it is your responsibility to immediately withdraw you work from consideration by other publications. Meridian does not publish creative work from current University of Virginia graduate or undergraduate students. Virginia students should not submit such work to the staff as it will be returned unread. We do, however, accept unsolicited book reviews and nonfiction from University of Virginia students. University of Virginia students should wait one year after graduation before submitting creative work to the magazine. So long as funding is available, Meridian will pay contributors of poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction $25 minimum, $250 maximum ($10 per page). Book reviewers receive no payment but do get a byline. Author interviews and other special features are negotiable. Payments to contributors are subject to change. Box 400145 Charlottesville, VA 22904-4145 Blue Ridge Country is a bi-monthly, full-color magazine embracing the feel and spirit of the Blue Ridge region--the traditions and recipes, the husbandry and farming, the country stores and bed-andbreakfast inns, the things to visit and learn about. In short, it is everything that will allow and encourage the reader to "take a trip home for the weekend" even if he or she has never lived in the region. Our territory extends from Western Maryland south through Virginia's Shenandoah Valley of Virginia down into northern Georgia and including all territory within about a half day's drive of the parkway. It includes the mountain regions of Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. Main Pieces: 750 - 2,500 words PLACES Everything there is to find out and tell about a great Blue Ridge town, city, or locale. The history, the current economic status, the quaint spots and characters, the best places to eat. A profile so complete our readers can make hard decisions on going to spend a weekend or even moving there. HISTORY AND LEGENDS From people and events to unexplained occurrences or phenomena, full magazine prints, fascinating tales of past and present. THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY AND THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL There's a wealth of wildlife, beauty, history and future plans involving the parkway and the trail and the areas immediately surrounding each. We'll bring our readers a new piece of America's favorite scenic highway and favorite footpath in each issue. GENERAL ARTICLES Anything that is well researched, well written and brings us some of the flavor of the region will get strong consideration. We'll be looking for at-home kinds of things--recipes and craft articles, natural history and wildlife, and especially pieces that embrace the whole of the region. Plus humor, first-person adventure or discovery and the "bests" of the region. DEPARTMENTS Similar to the main pieces, but shorter; places to see, things to do, recipes to try, great people doing great things, new books, etc.--anything and everything that contributes to the sense of the place. RIGHTS We buy exclusive first North America serial rights until the off-sale date of the issue in which material is published, as well as exclusive rights to the work for promotional reprint and use. PAY We pay from $25 (for department shorts) up to about $250 for major pieces. Payment is upon publication. Sample copies of the magazine are available. Send $3.00 and a magazine-size SASE.
