Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to write an
explanatory sociology essay, and communicate sociological
ideas and evidence in a mode other than an essay.

Modes other than an essay include but are not limited to: seminar, written report,
magazine article, audio recording, video recording, poster.

Sociological conventions refer to: acknowledging sources, referencing quotations
(including indirect quotations), listing references in alphabetical order by author, use
of footnotes, using non-sexist language.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Write an explanatory sociology essay.
Range

an explanatory essay.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Sociological ideas and evidence are communicated in a structure appropriate to
a sociology essay.
Range
structure is - introduction, main text, conclusion.
1.2
Paragraphs are structured and sequenced in a manner which allows for the
development of a line of reasoning.
1.3
A sociological explanation is developed, supported by relevant and sufficient
information, to answer the defined question.
1.4
Sociological conventions are observed to establish the source(s) of the
sociological information.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Sociological ideas and evidence are communicated in a format and style
appropriate to the purpose of the communication.
2.2
Sociological ideas are relevant to the topic and supported by evidence sufficient
to answer the question.
2.3
Appropriate sociological conventions are observed to establish the source(s) of
the sociological information.
