Why NOT? In preparing 7 and 8 year olds for First Penance and ‘examining their conscience’, the assignment was, for a few weeks during Lent, to write daily in their notebook, reflecting on their day, citing: 1. A ‘good’ action and 2. a ‘not so good’ action and to write, “Thank you Jesus for loving me.” When reviewing during class on Sunday, one little girl, very forthcoming said, “I don’t have my notebook. It’s with my Dad on his business trip…” Probable: I knew the father traveled for business. As class continued, the same girl raises her hand, and with a tear rolling her face says, “I’m sorry. My notebook is not with my Dad…I lied. I didn’t do my homework. Wow. Stopped me in my tracks… This is a 7½ year old, in front of entire class, volunteering the truth. All was forgiven and I was moved. This child may not recall this moment but I will treasure it forever! I volunteer as a Religious Ed teacher, 2nd grade. In the fall of 2009, St. Ann’s kick-started their Religious Education Program under the direction of Monica DeFalco. We had six 1st graders. In spring 2013, we had our largest First Communion class to date, 35 students; 20 from Religious Ed and 15 from Hoboken Catholic Academy, the only Catholic grammar school in Hoboken sponsored by the Hoboken Catholic Churches including St. Lawrence in Weehawken. Catholic schools are closing in our cities yet charter and private schools are on the rise. Religious Education is just as important in the development of a child as is math and science. More importantly, a relationship with Jesus and God is as important as a child’s first relationship with parents and siblings. Take a moment and consider volunteering your time a few hours a week and contribute to the spiritual formation of the children of St. Ann’s Faith Community as a Catechist, a Religious Ed teacher. Training is provided; no experience necessary. Classes are Sundays 9am to 10:15am followed by 10:30am Mass. Pray on it. It is a great way to share your faith, get involved in St. Ann’s Faith Community and create rewarding experiences! PASS IT ON to someone you think would like to share their faith and volunteer their time to help spiritually develop the children of St. Ann’s! Please contact Monica DeFalco, Coordinator of Religious Education, via email: defalcomonica@gmail.com with any questions and to volunteer . Prayer for Peace in Syria Pope Francis has asked that Saturday, September 7th, be a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria and other areas of conflict. God of Compassion, Hear the cries of the people of Syria, Bring healing to those suffering from the violence, Bring comfort to those mourning the dead, Strengthen Syria’s neighbors in their care and welcome for refugees, Convert the hearts of those who have taken up arms, And protect those committed to peace. God of Hope, Inspire leaders to choose peace over violence and to seek reconciliation with enemies, Inspire the Church around the world with compassion for the people of Syria, And give us hope for a future of peace built on justice for all. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and Light of the World, Amen. Petition: For the people of Syria, that God may strengthen the resolve of leaders to end the fighting and choose a future of peace. We pray to the Lord…
