Journal Entry 6 TM 9 Chapters 11, 12, & 13 The author has used many techniques to help the reader develop a deep understanding of her characters, especially Ellen. Ellen’s character changes as she experiences and overcomes many difficulties throughout the novel. A word picture is one way to represent a character. It is drawn with words instead of lines and curves. Look at the word picture on the left. It represents Ellen’s traits at the beginning of the novel. Now you draw a word picture representing Ellen’s traits at the end of the novel. Some of these traits may be the same. Use the Character Traits Menu handout (TM 4) to help.
