POLICY:
The integrity of flexible IV solution can be maintained when they are
placed in a dry warming cabinet at carefully controlled temperatures. The
warming cabinets should be set on 104º Fahrenheit. The IV solutions can remain
in the warming cabinet up to 14 days. Solutions should remain in their overwraps
until use. The warming cabinet temperature shall not exceed 104º Fahrenheit.
Once solutions are removed from the cabinet, they should be used within 24
hours or discarded, and not returned to stock. Solutions are not to be rewarmed.
PROCEDURE:
1. The warming cabinet will be maintained at a temperature of 104º.
2. A thermometer is utilized to monitor the warming cabinet and is recorded
on the daily log. A log is kept in each sub-sterile room.
3. Only fluids recommended for warming shall be placed in the warming unit.
4. Fluids are not to stay in the warmer for more than 14 days.
5. Fluids will be rotated on a daily basis.
6. Documentation of temperature will be done daily.
7. IV fluid is dispensed under the direct supervision of a physician.
