Meeting Notes

Committee members in attendance: Ed Ames, Amy Bosley, Mike Bosley, Shelby
Fioreintino, Donna Marino, Carole Nevels, Juan Olvera, Larry Rosen, Erin Smith, Katherine
Suarez, Valerie Burks
Team Roles and Objectives:
Amy Bosley gave an overview of the goal team’s tasks and assignments and guided the team
in further developing its purpose and responsibilities.


The team reviewed notes taken during the November 10th meeting and revisited the
previously established Team Principles and Roles (ground rules and responsibilities).
Team members not present at the November 10th meeting were assigned roles.
Strategic Issues Review:
The team reviewed the fifteen Strategic Issues (created in 2006 and finalized in 2008) and
chose to address updates regarding following issues:
 Issue 8 (update and write a brief): The college lacks the human, fiscal, technological,
and physical resources to meet all of the current needs of students and all who want to
be students.
o Procurement - student involvement/community partnerships
o Internship opportunities
o Cooperating organizations (preferred vendors)
 Issue 9 (update and write a brief): Students, faculty and staff do not always have
access to up-to-date, effective technologies that support learning and professional
success.
o Online courses and Internet access (wireless)
o Partnership opportunities in technology: Allied Health, Engineering, AIA
(Architecture)

New Strategic Issue (write a brief): The unique opportunities and challenges
encountered due to the uncertainty of the State College System.
o Maintaining our mission and direction
o Re-branding
o Funding
o Promoting Alumni involvement – instill tradition and loyalty
o Request input from Martha Williams, FACC President

The team reviewed Goal 4 Team Initiatives established by Senior Staff
o Create Strategic Communications Plan
o Create new Resource Development Plans
o Create Community Engagement Strategic Plan
o Substantive review of Valencia Enterprises Strategy

Objective 4.1- Community Investment
By 2013 Valencia will emerge as a first-tier investment for the philanthropic
community
o Determine what would make Valencia a first-tier investment (how do we know
or measure when we reach “first-tier” status).
 Activities
 Partners and donors
 Establish benchmarks against other organizations with similar size and
scope
o Define First-tier
 Based on Dr. Shugart’s input/definition
 Gifts UCF has received
 Gifts Rollins College has received
 Based on top 15 non-profit organizations in Orlando

Objective 4.2 – Alumni Involvement
By 2013 significantly increase membership and active involvement of alumni (time
and resources)
o Find current alumni statistics (2008) and establish numbers to increase (i.e.
increase alumni involvement by 50%)
o Define “active involvement”
Action Items:
Ed Ames: Issue 8 – Procurement information regarding community tie-in.
Mike Bosley: Issue 9 – Technology needs and UCF donators.
Shelby Fiorentino: Contact Martha Williams for input on new objective and Liz Gombash for
resources and opportunities regarding new objective (funding).
Donna Marino: Speak with Dr. Shugart regarding “first-tier” definition
Carole Nevels and Larry Rosen: Contact Barbara Shell regarding “active alumni” 2008,
potential membership (live, local, etc), other community college programs (best practices),
additional data.

Donna Marino and Juan Olvera: New Strategic Issue fact gathering – VSA, non-profit
community in Orlando, Guidestar, Top 15 non-profit organizations.
Valarie Burks: Contact Geraldine Gallagher regarding who is best to contact (externally) to
learn more about Orlando non-profit organization (ie. Barbara Roper)
Kathy Suarez: Email regarding financial aide
Mike Bosley: Contact Barbara Shell regarding allowing Valencia to be included on UCF
alumni application form
Donna Martin: Schedule next meeting in mid-January
