Director, Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation
2008 - present
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda
I lead an institute dedicated to conservation relevant research, monitoring, capacity building and management.
Principle activities include designing projects, raising funds, supervising research and providing assistance to
local partners. I remain a senior research associate of CIFOR.
Scientist, Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
1998 - 2008
Bogor, Indonesia
I developed led and coordinated biological, ecological, conservation and community-based studies with local
and international collaborators, mostly in East Kalimantan and West Papua. Additional emphases have been
reduced impact logging, integrating wildlife conservation in forestry practice, forest fires, and forest dynamics.
Supervision of young scientists was a major component. Funders included ITTO, EC, World Bank, SDC
(Swiss Development Corporation), MacArthur and UNESCO.
Consultancies
Since 1992
Include: 2009 Mid Term Review Team Leader for UNDP/GEF's Conservation of Biological Diversity Through
Improved Forest Planning Tools project in Malaysia; assessing logging and conservation in Guyana (for IUCN
and ITTO); the development of monitoring methods for the Semuliki and Kibale National Parks (for Uganda
Wildlife Authority and IUCN), Uganda. Methods design and supervision for Biodiversity Inventory of Mt Elgon
for IUCN.; review of WCS/CARE (SUBIR) research options in forestry and conservation in Esmeraldas
Province, Ecuador.; wrote ‘Managed Forests’ section for WCMC’s Resource Directory on Biodiversity
Information Management.; member of CIFOR’s rapid biodiversity survey, Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia; review
of the role of ‘benchmark sites’ in CIFOR’s Global research strategy (last two before I worked full-time for
CIFOR) Also: Tropical Biology Association course teacher, Kibale, Uganda. Ground truthing for ecological
mapping, for Makerere University-UWA, Murchison Falls, Uganda.
